Provincetown, Massachusetts
Cape Cod National Seashore's iconic gay beach — clothing-optional far end
Herring Cove is Provincetown's main gay beach and one of the most recognized LGBTQ+ gathering spots in the country, with roots going back to at least the 1960s. Part of Cape Cod National Seashore, the beach faces west over Cape Cod Bay — calmer, warmer water than the Atlantic side. The informal layout runs south from the parking lot: general area near the entrance, then a lesbian section, then the gay men's section further down, with a clothing-optional stretch toward Wood End Lighthouse at the far end. The west-facing orientation makes Herring Cove one of the best sunset spots on the East Coast — after 6 PM, parking is free. Lifeguards are on duty late June through Labor Day. Facilities include restrooms, outdoor showers, and a seasonal snack bar. Daily vehicle parking runs $25 in season; walk-in or bike entry is $15.
