Palm Springs, California
Full-service downtown hotel and the daytime home of The Dinah pool parties
A 261-room full-service hotel two blocks off Palm Canyon Drive, built around a big outdoor pool deck with the San Jacinto mountains right behind it. On an ordinary weekend it is a solid, unglamorous downtown base - Elements Spa on site, a complimentary shuttle to Palm Springs International, and a three-minute walk to the Arenas District gay bars. Once a year it becomes something else entirely. The Hilton is the daytime home of The Dinah, the Palm Springs festival most people still call Dinah Shore Weekend, and its pool deck hosts all three of the big pool parties - the G-Spot Pool Party on Friday, the signature L-Word Pool Party on Saturday, and Sunday Sapphic Splash to close. The festival Welcome Center sets up in the lobby. Rooms for that week sell through the festival as two-night packages rather than direct, and they go early.
