San Diego, California
Hillcrest New American tavern with rooftop patios.
Uptown Tavern sits in the middle of Hillcrest on University Avenue, a New American bar-and-restaurant with skylights, roll-up garage doors, and a pair of outdoor patios that make it as much a daytime spot as a nightlife one. The kitchen does elevated comfort food — chicken and waffles, flatbreads, and the like — and it's an easy place to land for happy hour or a meal in the gayborhood. On weekends it flips from restaurant to a higher-energy lounge: resident DJs at the main bar, a fireplace lounge, a full outdoor bar, and a Silent Disco where everyone dances to their own headphone channel. The DJ and dance nights keep a queer crowd in the mix. It's central and flexible, and works whether you want dinner or a late one.
