Austin, Texas
Lesbian-founded original with Austin's most-photographed mural on SoCo
Jo's on South Congress is the original — a coffee-and-food spot opened in 1999 as a kiosk in the Hotel San Jose parking lot by Liz Lambert and her brother Lou. Lambert is an openly lesbian hotelier whose work on S. Congress helped turn the strip into one of Austin's most recognizable streets. The side wall carries the "I love you so much" mural, one of the most photographed spots in the city, spray-painted by Lambert's then-girlfriend Amy Cook as a peace offering after a fight. The patio is the draw: mismatched chairs, dog-friendly, prime people-watching on SoCo. Sinners' Brunch runs Sundays with live music, and the Road Show flea market takes over the first and third Thursdays. The Iced Turbo — coffee, espresso, chocolate, hazelnut, cream — is the signature order. Breakfast tacos, fried pies, and a full lunch menu round it out.
