Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
North Hollywood gay bathhouse since 1984, with a sauna, gym, and sundeck.
North Hollywood Spa has run since 1984 — originally as The Compound — which makes it one of Los Angeles's longest-operating gay bathhouses and one of only two still open in the city. The 12,000-square-foot space spreads across two floors, with a dry sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, gym, and more than 100 private rooms, plus a garden sundeck with lounge chairs that's a genuine rarity for a bathhouse. A 2012 renovation added the sundeck and refreshed the gym and steam facilities. It sits on Vineland Avenue in NoHo, walkable from the North Hollywood Metro station, and draws a laid-back, bear-friendly crowd from across the San Fernando Valley. An on-site cafe keeps it self-contained for a long stay. Between this and FLEX on Melrose, it's one of the last two bathhouses serving the L.A. region — worth the trip for anyone who remembers when the city had many more.
