Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
West Hollywood's iconic gay megavenue — restaurant, bar, and dance club.
The Abbey started in 1991 as a Robertson Boulevard coffeehouse and grew into the most recognizable gay bar in West Hollywood, a sprawling indoor-outdoor complex of bars, patios, and dance space that's been named Best Gay Bar in the World more than once. Founder David Cooley dressed the room in church pews and stained glass (the name stuck); he sold to tech entrepreneur Tristan Schukraft in late 2023, and the place marked its 35th anniversary in 2026. It works as both a daytime restaurant-and-brunch spot and a late-night scene, with drag shows and a crowd that runs from first-time visitors to locals who've been coming for decades. If you only have one night in WeHo, this is the room most people mean when they say they're going out on Robertson.
