Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
The world's largest LGBTQ+ archive, with exhibitions and research at USC.
ONE Archives at the USC Libraries is the largest repository of LGBTQ+ historical materials in the world, founded in 1952 and now part of the USC Libraries. The holdings run into the millions of items: more than 33,000 books and monographs, over 13,000 periodical titles, some 700 manuscript and photograph collections, films, recordings, posters, banners, and ephemera documenting more than a century of queer life, with particular depth on Los Angeles and Southern California. For a traveler this is less a quick photo stop than a genuine pilgrimage for anyone who cares about where the movement came from. The research center sits near USC in the West Adams district, with a reading room open to researchers, students, and the curious public alongside rotating exhibitions and public programs. ONE traces its roots to ONE, Inc. and ONE Magazine, among the earliest sustained gay publications in the country, which gives the place a direct line back to the pre-Stonewall organizing that began in Los Angeles.
