Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
Hollywood's longtime gay Latinx dance hall with weekend drag shows.
Plaza is a Latino gay nightclub and dance hall on La Brea Avenue that has been running for more than 40 years, open Fridays and Saturdays only. The big floor fills with cumbias, rancheras, reggaeton, and Latin pop, and a full proscenium stage hosts drag twice a night, around 10:15pm and midnight, with performers in sequined gowns lip-syncing to frenetic cumbias and rancheras. The bar is cash-only and the drinks are cheap. The place is deliberately unassuming from the street, with barred windows and almost no signage, easy to mistake for a shuttered storefront, and that is part of the appeal: the energy is entirely inside. Plaza is Latino-owned, veteran-owned, and women-owned, and bills itself as a transgender safe space, which shows in a crowd that runs warmer and more mixed than the polished clubs a few miles west in WeHo. There is a small cover at the door.
