Part of the Gay Los Angeles Guide — bars, events & things to do.
Los Angeles, California
Historic Venice queer cocktail bar on Abbot Kinney with a patio.
Roosterfish is a queer bar on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice and one of the oldest gay bars on LA's Westside. It first opened in 1979 and served the neighborhood for nearly four decades before closing in 2016, then reopened in June 2018 under new ownership, timed to Venice Pride. The feel is neighborhood bar more than nightclub: pool tables, a patio, local art on the walls, and a cocktail list that leans on mezcal, gin, and house infusions. Since reopening it draws a broader mixed crowd, but it remains a landmark for queer Westsiders on a street that has changed enormously since 1979. A second Roosterfish has since opened in West Hollywood, at 8948 Santa Monica Boulevard in the Rainbow District, run under a name-licensing arrangement with Venice Pride rather than as one shared operation.
