Saugatuck, Michigan
Art Coast performing arts hub in a former pie factory.
The cultural heartbeat of Michigan's Art Coast, housed in — wait for it — a former pie factory. What started in 2003 as a group of local visionaries reimagining an abandoned building has become one of West Michigan's most dynamic performing arts venues. The 430-seat theater (once the factory's freezer) hosts Equity-level Broadway productions each summer that visitors consistently describe as unexpectedly world-class — think Come From Away, Waitress, Million Dollar Quartet, and Legally Blonde, performed by casts that regularly blow audiences away with their talent. Beyond theater, the SCA programs year-round concerts from national touring acts, comedy shows, intimate lobby performances with pianists and opera singers in winter, film screenings, art exhibitions, a sculpture garden, and creative workshops for all ages (recent offerings include making paper from invasive weeds).
