Saugatuck, Michigan
Saugatuck's original safe space, and still its most beloved coffee shop. Originally founded in 1994 by queer owners Guy and Stephen, Uncommon became the first LGBTQ+-friendly gathering place in the Saugatuck area — long before rainbow flags were flying on every block. In 2021, two of the shop's longtime partner farmers, Bruno Nobre and Mauricio DaSilva, took over the business. Both come from multi-generational coffee farming families in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil and regularly travel back to their family farms. They source beans from sustainable small farms and cooperatives worldwide and roast in small batches at their nearby facility. NGLCC Certified LGBTQ business, farmer-owned, and minority-owned. The café on Hoffman Street serves house-roasted coffee, cold brew, specialty lattes, smoothies, pressed juices, and freshly baked goods (the almond croissants and zucchini walnut muffins are favorites). They also sell branded blends including a Love Wins and a Pride Blend. Cozy interior with varied seating, large patio, and a walk-up window for pup parents. They even offer coffee classes and roasting facility tours.
