Portland's longtime gay bar Scandals, reborn on NE Alberta
Scandals East is the new home of Scandals, the gay bar that opened in downtown Portland in 1979 and closed that location in 2025 after 46 years. It reopened in 2026 on NE Alberta Street in a mustard-colored building that once housed the nuns of St. Andrew's Catholic Church across the street, and it shares the ground floor with Carioca Bowls. The owners say they're keeping the old Scandals traditions going: karaoke, Drag Race nights, live music, Last Thursday events and the annual Pride Block Party, with a large outdoor seating area and a stage for warm-weather shows. The 21+ bar runs from 4 p.m. to midnight, and dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. is open to all ages, with a New Mexican menu of carne adovada, beans and red or green chile platters.
