The Pines Beach is the ocean beach of Fire Island Pines, the gay community on Fire Island reached by Sayville Ferry Service from Sayville on Long Island — the LIRR runs to Sayville, then the ferry. The Pines is one of 17 communities inside Fire Island National Seashore; there are no public roads inside the Seashore, so you arrive by boat and walk the boardwalks to the sand. The harbor and the community's businesses are a few minutes' walk from the beach, and the Seashore's Barrett Beach sits next door. The Park Service notes that many Fire Island communities have no public restrooms, and that pets are restricted on the Seashore's own ocean beaches from March 15 through Labor Day. Passenger ferries run mid-May to mid-October; June through September is the season.
