The Stable is a gay cocktail bar at 125 Washington Street in downtown Providence, done up with equestrian decor and built around a billiards table and a secluded backyard patio that's a rarity among the city's bars. It's a cocktail-bar-sized room, not a megaclub, the kind of place where the bartenders learn your name after a couple of visits. Its signature is Sangria Sundays, a long-running weekly that brings in guest bartenders from across New England, often with drag performances. Themed drink nights, RuPaul's Drag Race viewing parties, and karaoke fill out the rest of the calendar. On a downtown strip better known for high-energy dance floors, the Stable is the spot to start the night or wind it down: close enough to walk to everything else, calm enough to actually have a conversation.
