Vancouver, British Columbia
Award-winning queer theatre company at The Cultch in East Vancouver since 2008
A queer theatre company rooted at The Cultch in East Vancouver, founded in 2008 by Cameron Mackenzie. Zee Zee started out throwing voguing balls, the dress-up party Queerbash, and the weekly drag variety show Apocalypstick before growing into a full producing company, now past its 18th season with Mackenzie as artistic and executive director. House playwright Dave Deveau has earned more than twenty Jessie Richardson Award nominations, and his My Funny Valentine won the Sydney Risk Prize for Outstanding Original Play. In 2022 the company launched the National Queer and Trans Playwriting Unit, a cross-country consortium that pays a cohort of playwrights a monthly stipend to develop new work over several months. Recent seasons have built around queer joy as a form of resistance — a fair shorthand for the company's register overall: serious about craft, but rarely solemn.
