Neighborhoods·Los Angeles Gay Guide

What is the Gay Neighborhood in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles has two primary LGBTQ+ neighborhoods, each with a distinct personality. West Hollywood is the established, high-energy gay hub, while Silver Lake draws a more indie, arts-focused queer crowd.

West Hollywood (WeHo) — The Rainbow District

WeHo is an independent city (not just an LA neighborhood) incorporated in 1984, with over 40% of its population identifying as LGBTQ+. The officially designated Rainbow District runs one mile along Santa Monica Boulevard between La Cienega Boulevard and Doheny Drive, packed with 25+ gay bars, dozens of LGBTQ+-owned shops, and 60+ gay-friendly restaurants.

Key landmarks include The Abbey Food & Bar (the Midwest — err, West Coast's most famous gay bar), Micky's Weho, Rocco's WeHo, and Hi Tops WeHo. The iconic rainbow crosswalks at Santa Monica Boulevard and San Vicente Boulevard mark the heart of the district. West Hollywood Park is home to the STORIES: AIDS Monument, honoring lives lost to the epidemic.

Silver Lake

A few miles east, Silver Lake became LA's gay leather subculture hub in the 1970s and has evolved into an indie, artsy queer neighborhood centered along Sunset Boulevard and Hyperion Boulevard. You'll find Akbar (a beloved queer bar since 1996), Eagle LA (leather/bear bar), and a growing cluster of queer-owned cafes and boutiques. The vibe is more neighborhood-casual than WeHo's high-energy club scene.
