Late-night dive bar in a former brothel, open since 1987
Late-night dive bar in a former brothel on Lützowstraße near the Schöneberg border, open since May 1987. Art student Mark Ernestus took over the bankrupt Club Maitresse and opened it as-is — the original bordello decor is still intact: nicotine-stained carpet walls, velvet paintings, and flea-market altars made from dildos and porcelain figurines behind the bar. The name means "buddy nest," coined by a regular watching two drunks stumble out arm-in-arm. The crowd is mixed — gay men, artists, tourists, locals, sex workers — with a notably queer lean that's kept it on Berlin's gay bar maps for nearly 40 years. Tiny metal dance floor, no credit cards, open until 5 AM on weeknights and 8 or 9 AM on weekends. Ernestus went on to co-found Basic Channel and open Hard Wax records; the bar hasn't changed a thing.
