Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Milwaukee's LGBT community center, serving the city since 1998.
Founded in 1998, the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center is one of Wisconsin's longest-running LGBTQ+ organizations and the closest thing the city's queer community has to a front door. Its programs run toward whole-person care: free mental health counseling, transgender support groups, youth mentorship through Project Q, a food pantry, and a free clothing boutique, with community visits topping 49,000 a year at the Center's peak. In May 2026 the Center came full circle, cutting the ribbon on a new home at 161 S. 1st St. — back in Walker's Point, the historic heart of LGBTQ+ Milwaukee where it first opened in 1998. The more compact, intentional space sits on three bus lines to keep services close to the neighborhoods and transit riders who use them most, and operates under Executive Director Ritchie Martin Jr., who first walked in as a teenager. Less a sightseeing stop than a working resource — though for a traveler it's a reliable read on what's happening in the local community.
