Queer cocktail bar in Dalston with dinner-and-cabaret nights and a basement club.
The Roses of Elagabalus is a queer cocktail bar and restaurant on Kingsland Road, right next to Dalston Junction station, sharing its name with Lawrence Alma-Tadema's 1888 painting. Behind a curtained entrance there is a ground-floor bar, a small library of erotic coffee-table books and a cabaret room with a curved stage; the basement has a second bar and a club room for weekend DJs. Weeknights centre on Dinner and a Show, with drag and cabaret over food from rotating chef residencies, and the drinks list is strong modern classics. Phone cameras get stickered at the door. It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm; the main bar and cabaret room are step-free with a ramp, but the basement is down a narrow staircase.
