London's Gay Bar Scene at a Glance

London's gay nightlife doesn't live in one neighbourhood. Soho, around Old Compton Street, is the dense core: a dozen bars within a few minutes' walk, from 19th-century pubs to basement dance floors. Heaven sits under the arches at Charing Cross. Vauxhall, south of the river, is where the late clubs and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern are. Clapham has its own cabaret strip, and East London, from Limehouse to Dalston, runs the drag rooms and the scene that doesn't look like Soho.

  • For your first night in Soho: Comptons, The Admiral Duncan, The Yard, Ku Bar
  • For a dance floor: Heaven (G-A-Y), Village Soho, Freedom, Ku Bar
  • For drag and cabaret: Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Two Brewers, Halfway to Heaven, The Divine
  • For bears, leather and cruise bars: The Kings Arms, Eagle London, The Lord Clyde, Ted's Place
  • For women: She Soho
  • For a neighbourhood local: The Cock Tavern, The Rising SE1, Queen Adelaide

Soho: Old Compton Street and Around

Soho is where most visitors start, and it's where the bars are closest together. Old Compton Street is the spine; Wardour Street, Rupert Street and Frith Street fill in around it. Crawling between them takes minutes.

Comptons

A gay pub on Old Compton Street since 1986, in a building that opened as the Swiss Hotel in 1890. It calls itself the "Grande Dame of Old Compton Street," and the point is a traditional British boozer: a ground-floor horseshoe bar, an upstairs lounge, and a crowd that spills onto the pavement on warm nights. Mixed, mostly mature, no fuss.

The Admiral Duncan

A small, traditional pub that has traded on Old Compton Street since at least the 1830s, with drag shows and a talk-to-strangers crowd. In April 1999 a neo-Nazi nail bomb here killed three people and injured dozens; a memorial chandelier and plaque inside commemorate them. Come for the warmth and the drag.

Village Soho

On Wardour Street since 1991, across three floors: drag cabaret, karaoke and go-go dancers, with house on the main floor, a basement that turns to techno, and an upstairs cocktail lounge. Quiet by day, loud by midnight.

Freedom Bar

Also on Wardour Street, a fixture since the 1990s. A polished cocktail bar upstairs and a clubbier basement with disco balls, poles and DJs playing pop and dance. It draws a dressed-up crowd with a long-standing West End performer following, and runs drag and cabaret alongside club nights.

Ku Bar

Three floors on Lisle Street by Leicester Square, with a bright street-level bar and a low-lit basement, KU Klub, running DJs most nights. The Ku name dates to 1995. Young, mixed and busy, it's a pre-club bar that rolls into late dancing without a change of venue.

Little Ku

Ku's smaller, gay-owned sibling on Frith Street: three floors of a townhouse, a margarita list it builds its name on, and a curved-ceiling basement where DJs play pop and throwbacks Wednesday through Saturday.

The Yard

A Soho fixture since 1993 at 57 Rupert Street, built around a heated cobbled courtyard you enter through an archway, one of the few outdoor drinking spaces in central Soho. A balconied loft bar overlooks it. Local, a little older, relaxed.

Rupert Street Bar

The glass-fronted café-bar on Rupert Street, with wraparound windows made for people-watching. Happy hour runs until 8pm most days; Thursday's Draaag! cabaret and Sunday's Ember's House drag show bookend the week.

Friendly Society

Down Tisbury Court off Wardour Street, behind an unmarked door: a basement of deliberate kitsch, with Barbie dolls hung from the ceiling, mirror balls and old films on the back wall. Disco and classic dance, a broad mixed crowd, and a room where you can actually hear each other.

The Duke of Wellington

"The Welly" has served gay Soho from Wardour Street since 2001. Bingo on Tuesdays, a Wednesday quiz, FURSDAY for bears and admirers, and DJs Friday through Sunday. Dancing downstairs, tables upstairs, and a pavement spot out front in summer.

The Kings Arms

On Poland Street, just off the Soho grid, in a building whose pub licence dates to 1706. It bills itself as Soho's oldest gay bar and London's favourite bear bar: real ale on the handpumps, Bearaoke on Sundays, a Tuesday quiz and DJs at the weekend. Small, and it fills fast.

She Soho

A lesbian bar on Old Compton Street since January 2014, opened by Ku Bar's owner after Candy Bar closed. It's a basement room, event-led: Ruby Tuesday, SING! karaoke, weekend DJs and a Sapphic Sunday quiz.

Pro Tip

Soho pubs fill early and spill onto the pavement from after work. Start around Old Compton Street at 6 or 7pm, then move to the basements (Village, Freedom, Ku) after 10pm. Most Soho bars close well before Heaven does.

Charing Cross and the Strand

A five-minute walk south of Soho, under and around Charing Cross station.

Heaven (G-A-Y)

A nightclub holding well over a thousand people, built into the railway arches beneath Charing Cross station, open since 1979. G-A-Y is the resident club brand, here since 2008, with pop, dance and live performances Thursday through Saturday. Mondays bring Popcorn, a long-running weekly night. The stage has hosted Madonna, Kylie and Lady Gaga.

Halfway to Heaven

A traditional gay pub steps from Trafalgar Square since 1991, named for sitting between Soho and Heaven. Cask ales upstairs at prices reasonable for the area, and a basement cabaret lounge running drag and cabaret seven nights a week. The crowd is older and chattier than the club up the road.

Retro Bar

A small gay indie bar down an alley off the Strand, walls covered in rock and pop photography, with a jukebox running from 70s disco to goth. A gay venue since the 1990s, it draws the alternative crowd. Pub, not club, and cheaper than Soho.

Vauxhall and Kennington

South of the river, Vauxhall is where London goes late. The railway arches around the station hold the clubs, and Kennington Lane runs past the two venues most people come for.

Royal Vauxhall Tavern

A Victorian pub on Kennington Lane from the early 1860s, and in 2015 the first building in England given Grade II listing specifically for its LGBTQ+ history. Paul O'Grady built Lily Savage here, and the Saturday club Duckie ran for 27 years until 2022. Expect alternative cabaret, drag and club nights: campy, political, rarely polished.

Eagle London

An independent late-night bar and club on Kennington Lane, with roots in the leather scene and a broader crowd now. It's the home of Horse Meat Disco, the Sunday party that grew a global following, with nights like Athena, Handsome and 80:20 across the weekend. A proper dance floor, a beer garden and a pool table; gritty by design.

The Cock Tavern

A 200-year-old Georgian building near Kennington station, run as a gay pub since 2018 by Farika Holden. The décor is what she calls "Georgian Tiki." Open Thursday to Sunday, with resident DJs at weekends, open mic nights and a Sunday quiz. A 30-plus local crowd.

Clapham, Elephant & Castle and South London

Two Brewers

On Clapham High Street since 1981 and the centre of Clapham's gay scene: drag and lip-sync cabaret most nights, plus karaoke, quizzes and late club nights after the show. Friendlier and less scene-y than central Soho, a short walk from Clapham Common station.

ARCH Clapham

A bar and cabaret venue in a railway arch on Voltaire Road, open since December 2020. Thursday drag bingo, Delicious Fridays, Rotation Saturdays and a drag Sunday roast with comedy, plus a large outdoor terrace in summer.

The Rising SE1

A gay community local in Elephant & Castle, opened in April 2024 in a pub that was The Rising Sun for nearly 90 years and was nearly turned into flats. Board games on Tuesdays, live music Thursdays, drag and DJs at the weekend, Sunday jazz. Dog-friendly.

Ye Olde Rose & Crown

A Victorian corner pub at the foot of Crooms Hill in Greenwich, rebuilt in 1888, next to Greenwich Theatre. Drag bingo, Drag Race screenings, weekend drag and a quiz, with proper pub food and Greenwich Park on the doorstep.

The Lord Clyde

A men's cruise and fetish bar in a Victorian pub in Deptford, reopened in June 2022. Three floors, with a traditional bar upstairs and a cruise space below. Five minutes from New Cross station.

East London: Limehouse to Dalston

East London's scene is younger, more mixed and more about drag and DJs than pints on the pavement.

The White Swan

A long-running gay pub on Commercial Road in Limehouse, with a basement club. Old-school by design: Sunday tea dances, a Wednesday amateur strip contest, and strippers or drag before chart music until 3am at the weekend. A cheerful East End crowd.

Queen Adelaide

A two-floor gay pub in Bethnal Green near Cambridge Heath, opened in 2015 as the successor to the George & Dragon on Hackney Road, with the staff, regulars and décor moving over. A proper pub upstairs and a mirrored basement dance floor Thursday to Saturday.

The Divine

A two-floor bar and performance venue in Dalston, opened in February 2024 by the team behind The Glory. Drag runs most nights, including LIPSYNC1000 and the drag king battle Man Up, and the whole place turns into a club from 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Dalston Superstore

A café and bar on Kingsland High Street by day and a basement dance floor by night, open since 2009. A monthly MEAT party, M.A.D Wednesdays, weekend drag brunch and a deliberately wide crowd.

King's Cross, Camden and West London

Central Station

A gay pub and small B&B in King's Cross since 1992, with karaoke, cabaret and drag in the main bar and The Underground Club, a separate fetish and cruise venue, in the basement with its own entrance on Balfe Street. It carries a pink heritage plaque from Islington's Pride.

Zodiac Bar

A trans-founded, community-run bar on Hampstead Road in Camden, grown from a 2020 pop-up series. Drag shows, drag bingo, karaoke, DJs and trans nights.

Ted's Place

A below-street-level cruise bar on North End Road in West Kensington. Fridays are men-only, and Thursdays and Sundays welcome trans women and crossdressers alongside gay men. Low-lit, no frills, well-priced.

City of Quebec

A gay pub on Old Quebec Street, a minute from Marble Arch, and one of the West End's few gay bars outside Soho.

London's Gay Saunas

London has nine gay saunas and cruise clubs on Out x Out, from Pleasuredrome under the Waterloo arches to Portsea near Marble Arch and SweatBox in Soho. They have their own page:

Getting Around

Pro Tip

Most Tube lines stop around half past midnight on weeknights. On Friday and Saturday nights the Night Tube runs all night on the Victoria (for Vauxhall), Central, Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines and the Windrush line (for Dalston), and night buses cover the rest. Oxford Circus to Vauxhall is four stops on the Victoria line.

I'm Robbie, the founder of Out x Out. I'm from Minneapolis, though I'm spending 2026 building this community from the road — somewhere between South America and Asia. The idea for Out x Out came from a trip to Berlin, where the gay nightlife calendar was years ahead of ours: you could see not just where to go out, but which night to go — so naturally I wanted that kind of insider info for every city in the US (and beyond... eventually). I'm more of a behind-the-scenes type, but the whole point of this is connection: I'd take one real one over a hundred surface-level ones, and I'm trying to build that for the community, city by city.
