Saugatuck, Michigan
Nestled along the Kalamazoo River at 880 Holland Street, this unassuming building houses some of the best fried chicken in Michigan — and that's not just local talk. The Wall Street Journal and Bon Appétit have both written it up. Powered by James Beard Award semi-finalist chef Matthew Millar (previously of The Journeyman in Fennville and Reserve in Grand Rapids), The Southerner is rooted in the story of Appalachian families who migrated to Michigan in the 1950s seeking auto industry work, bringing their cooking traditions with them. The fried chicken takes over 12 hours to marinate and comes in several heat levels: traditional buttermilk, Piermont Dip, Nashville Hot, and Habanero Hot (no refunds if you can't handle it — you've been warned). The biscuits with honey butter are legendary.
