Part of the Gay London Guide — bars, events & things to do.

London, London
East London gay pub in Limehouse, open since 1985 on Commercial Road.
East London's longest-running gay pub, open since 1985 on Commercial Road in Limehouse. Also known as BJ's White Swan. Comedian Michael Barrymore came out on stage here; Ian McKellen was a regular after his own coming out. The building got a basement nightclub addition in 2014 with LED lighting and an upgraded sound system. The programming is deliberately old-school: Sunday Tea Dances draw an older crowd for waltz and tango. Wednesday is an amateur strip contest around midnight. Friday and Saturday nights run strippers or drag followed by chart music and dancing until 3am. Piano singalongs and bingo fill out the calendar. The crowd is working-class East Enders and Essex regulars — cheerful, rowdy, and the opposite of Soho polish.
