Berlin, Germany
Queer bar inside a repurposed cruising toilet under Kreuzberg's Yorckstraße traffic island, since 2018.
Queer bar built inside a former cruising toilet beneath the Yorckstraße traffic island in Kreuzberg. "Klappe" is Berlin slang for the anonymous sex meeting spots gay men used for decades — the name is deliberate. The underground space opened in 2018 after the city couldn't demolish it due to water and transit lines running underneath. White subway tiles, graffiti-covered walls, frosted glass ceiling panels filtering daylight from the street above, and colorful chandeliers that cut against the raw tiled surroundings. Capacity tops out around 50–100 people. Programming runs event-by-event rather than fixed nightly hours: techno and house DJ sets, fetish nights, drag, poetry readings, and activism events. The venue explicitly prioritizes BIPOC and queer artists, and mentors newer party organizers in Berlin's underground scene. Cash only, €10–20 entry. This is politically conscious queer nightlife rooted in Kreuzberg — not Schöneberg's traditional gay village.
