Every summer, the Jersey Shore town of Asbury Park turns into a bear playground for a long weekend. The Asbury Park Beach Bear Invasion packs four days with poolside tea dances, a beach takeover, a downtown vendor market, and late-night dance parties — all centered on The Empress Hotel and its legendary Paradise nightclub, a block from the sand. It's muscle bears on the beach, polar bears in the pool, and cubs on Cookman Avenue.

This guide covers everything for Bear Invasion 2026 — the full weekend lineup, the signature parties (Furball, the Plunge pool party, RAM), the best bars in town, and where to stay so you can walk to all of it. Whether you're driving down from New York or flying into Newark, here's how to do the weekend right.

Bear Invasion 2026 Overview

The Asbury Park Beach Bear Invasion is a long-running Jersey Shore tradition — a bear-and-cub weekend that grew alongside Asbury Park's revival into one of the Northeast's favorite summer bear getaways. It runs on the boardwalk-adjacent block anchored by The Empress Hotel, whose Paradise complex brings two dance rooms, a martini lounge, a heated pool, and two tiki bars under one roof.

  • Dates: Friday, July 31 through Monday, August 3, 2026
  • Headquarters: The Empress Hotel & Paradise, a block from the Asbury Park boardwalk
  • Signature parties: Furball (Fri), the Plunge pool party (Sat day), RAM (Sat night), plus tea dances that open and close the weekend
  • Cost: Individual parties are separately ticketed; the beach and downtown are free. Weekend and party passes typically sell through Bear Invasion Events
  • Key Areas:
    • The Empress / Paradise: Ground zero — the pool parties, the dance floors, and the hotel base
    • The Beach & Boardwalk: Bears on the Beach by day, steps from the hotel
    • Cookman Avenue: Downtown's bars, restaurants, and the Bear Market Day
  • Hotels: The Empress is the party HQ and sells out first — book early, or grab a nearby boardwalk hotel

Bear Invasion 2026 Weekend Lineup

  • Friday, July 31 — Opening Night: The weekend kicks off with the Welcome Tea Dance at The Empress pool (5-9 PM), then the dance floor opens with Furball at Paradise from 10 PM.
  • Saturday, August 1 — Peak Day: The signature Plunge Pool Party takes over the Paradise pool (12-6 PM), Bear Market Day runs downtown (12-8 PM), and the headline RAM dance party goes late at Paradise (10 PM-close).
  • Sunday, August 2 — Beach & Farewell: Bears on the Beach takes over the Asbury Park sand by day, then the Closing Tea Dance at The Empress (5-9 PM) sends the weekend off.
  • Monday, August 3 — Recovery: Bears on the Beach continues for one last relaxed day on the shore before everyone heads home.

The Pool Parties

The daytime scene is the heart of Bear Invasion. The Plunge Pool Party — the weekend's signature daytime party, presented by Daddy Ersin — takes over the heated Paradise pool at The Empress on Saturday from noon to 6 PM. Expect a packed deck, DJs, and the full cross-section of the bear community.

Pro Tip

The Paradise pool deck fills up fast on Saturday. Arrive near noon to claim space, bring cash for the tiki bars, and reef-safe sunscreen — the deck gets full afternoon sun.

The Dance Parties

Two branded dance parties headline the nights. Friday belongs to Furball, the touring bear-and-cub dance party, landing at Paradise from 10 PM. Saturday night is RAM — the weekend's biggest dance floor, also presented by Daddy Ersin — running late in Paradise's two dance rooms.

Pro Tip

Paradise has two dance rooms plus a martini lounge, so there's room to move between a high-energy main floor and somewhere cooler to catch your breath. Buy party passes ahead — the marquee nights sell out.

Bears on the Beach

Asbury Park's beach is the daytime gathering spot, and Bears on the Beach is the weekend's free, low-key anchor — the community claims a stretch of sand on Sunday and again Monday, right below the boardwalk and a short walk from The Empress. Bring a beach badge (Asbury Park requires one in season), a blanket, and settle in.

Tea Dances & Bear Market Day

The weekend opens and closes with poolside tea dances at The Empress — the Welcome Tea Dance on Friday evening and the Closing Tea Dance on Sunday. In between, Bear Market Day brings vendors, gear, and community booths to the Cookman Avenue area on Saturday afternoon — the daytime break between the pool and the dance floor.

Best Bars & Nightlife

Beyond the Paradise complex, Asbury Park's compact gay-friendly nightlife is all within a walk. Paradise is the marquee club (and the weekend's home base); Georgies is the beloved neighborhood gay bar; Watermark is the upscale beachfront lounge; and Wonder Bar is the iconic live-music room with the famous "Tillie" face out front.

Where to Stay for Bear Invasion

Stay at The Empress (Party HQ)

The Empress Hotel is the beating heart of Bear Invasion — the Paradise pool parties and dance floors are on-site, so you can roll from your room to the party and back. It sells out first and books up months ahead for this weekend.

Beyond the Empress

If The Empress is full, a handful of boardwalk hotels put you a short walk from the action.

  • The Asbury Hotel — the design-forward flagship of Asbury Park's revival, with a rooftop bar and a lively pool, a block from the boardwalk
  • The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel — a grand oceanfront hotel directly across from the beach, a few blocks from The Empress

Airbnb & Vacation Rentals

Asbury Park and neighboring Ocean Grove have plenty of summer rentals, but the beach town books up fast on peak weekends and minimum-night stays are common in season. If you want to walk to the parties without a rideshare, staying in central Asbury Park near the boardwalk is worth the premium.

Pro Tip

Bear Invasion falls on a peak summer beach weekend — Asbury Park hotels are pricey and sell out. Book as early as you can, and staying walkable to The Empress saves you parking headaches all weekend.

Getting There & Getting Around

From New York & the Airports

Asbury Park is about 60 miles from New York City and roughly the same from Newark Liberty (EWR), the closest major airport. Driving takes 75-90 minutes depending on shore traffic. Philadelphia is about 70 miles southwest.

By Train

The car-free option: NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line runs from New York Penn Station (and Newark) straight to the Asbury Park station, a short walk or rideshare from the boardwalk and The Empress. It's the easiest way to skip shore-weekend traffic and parking.

Parking & Getting Around

Downtown Asbury Park is walkable — once you're in, you can do the whole weekend on foot. Summer-weekend parking near the boardwalk is limited and metered; if you drive, a hotel with parking is worth it. Rideshare is available but surges on Saturday night.

Pro Tip

Take the train. NJ Transit's Coast Line drops you minutes from The Empress, and skipping the Saturday shore traffic and the boardwalk parking scramble makes the whole weekend easier.

About Asbury Park Bear Invasion

The Asbury Park Beach Bear Invasion has been a Jersey Shore summer fixture for over a decade, growing alongside the town's own comeback into one of the Northeast's signature bear weekends. Built around The Empress Hotel and its Paradise nightclub — a rare all-in-one gay resort complex on the boardwalk — the weekend pairs the classic bear-community mix of pool parties, tea dances, and dance floors with a full day on the Atlantic. It draws bears, cubs, and their admirers from across the tri-state area and beyond each summer.

When is Asbury Park Bear Invasion 2026?

Asbury Park Beach Bear Invasion 2026 runs Friday, July 31 through Monday, August 3. The peak day is Saturday, August 1 — the Plunge pool party runs 12-6 PM and the RAM dance party goes late that night, both at Paradise inside The Empress Hotel.

Is Bear Invasion free?

The beach and downtown are free, and Bears on the Beach is an open, no-ticket gathering. The parties — the tea dances, Furball, the Plunge pool party, and RAM — are separately ticketed. Weekend passes and individual party tickets are sold through Bear Invasion Events; buy the marquee nights ahead as they sell out.

Where do the Bear Invasion parties happen?

Almost everything centers on The Empress Hotel and its Paradise complex, a block from the Asbury Park boardwalk — the pool parties on the deck, and Furball and RAM in Paradise's two dance rooms. Bear Market Day runs downtown near Cookman Avenue, and Bears on the Beach is on the Asbury Park sand.

What should I wear to Bear Invasion?

It's a summer beach weekend, so pack for daytime pool-and-beach (swimwear, sunscreen, a hat) and cooler nights out (whatever your dance-floor look is). Comfortable shoes for the boardwalk and Cookman Avenue, and a beach badge for the sand — Asbury Park requires one in season.

How do I get to Asbury Park?

The easiest car-free route is NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line train from New York Penn Station or Newark to the Asbury Park station, a short walk or rideshare from the boardwalk. Driving from NYC or Newark Airport takes 75-90 minutes; downtown is walkable once you arrive, so a hotel near The Empress lets you skip the shore-weekend parking scramble.

Where should I stay for Bear Invasion?

Stay at The Empress Hotel if you can — the Paradise pool parties and dance floors are on-site, so you never have to leave. It sells out first, so book early. Nearby boardwalk options like The Asbury Hotel and The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel keep you walkable to the action. See all gay-friendly hotels in Asbury Park.
