Neighborhoods·San Diego Gay Guide

What is the Gay Neighborhood in San Diego?

San Diego's primary gay neighborhood is Hillcrest, part of the Uptown community planning area just north of Balboa Park. The neighborhood is bounded by Mission Hills to the northwest, University Heights to the north, North Park to the east, and Bankers Hill and Balboa Park to the south.

The Heart of Hillcrest

The core of the neighborhood centers along University Avenue and Fifth Avenue, anchored by the iconic neon Hillcrest sign that arches over the roadway. This stretch is packed with LGBTQ+-owned and LGBTQ+-friendly bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops. Major nightlife spots include Rich's (San Diego's largest gay nightclub), Urban MO's Bar & Grill, Flicks, and The Rail.

Community Landmarks

Hillcrest is also home to The San Diego LGBT Community Center, Diversionary Theatre (one of the oldest LGBTQ+ theaters in the country), and Hillcrest Brewing Company, widely recognized as the first openly gay brewery in the world.

Surrounding Neighborhoods

The broader Uptown area — including North Park, University Heights, and Bankers Hill — also has a strong LGBTQ+ presence with an expanding mix of queer-friendly businesses, making the entire corridor north of Balboa Park welcoming to the community.
