San Diego, California
Hillcrest LGBTQ+ community center serving San Diego since 1972.
The San Diego LGBT Community Center — known locally as The Center — is one of the largest and longest-running LGBTQ+ community organizations in the country, with roots going back to 1972. It has anchored its Centre Street home in Hillcrest since the late 1990s and now runs a multi-site operation: the main Hillcrest facility, youth centers in Hillcrest and Chula Vista, the North Park Senior Apartments, and the Sunburst Youth Housing Project for homeless and at-risk young people. Its services span housing, sexual and behavioral health, advocacy, and civic engagement, with dedicated programming for youth, seniors, trans and nonbinary folks, immigrants, and QTPOC communities. Free congregate meals for people 60 and up run weekday afternoons, and the Center's signature LGBTQ+ Luminaries Lunch fills the Hilton San Diego Bayfront each June. For a visitor it is both a safety net and a front door to the city's queer community.
