Part of the Gay San Diego Guide — bars, events & things to do.

San Diego, California
Hillcrest gay brewpub and pizzeria with craft taps.
Hillcrest Brewing Company opened in 2012 billed as the world's first out-and-proud gay brewery, and it still sits next to the giant Hillcrest Pride flag on University Avenue — about as central to the neighborhood as an address gets. It stopped brewing on-site in 2020 and now runs as a bar and pizzeria, pouring a rotating wall of local guest taps alongside a few of its own original recipes, with stone-fired pizzas that carry the bar's signature cheeky names. It's laid-back and patio-friendly, more neighborhood hang than nightlife — a good first or last stop on a Hillcrest crawl, whether you're splitting a pie with friends or working through the tap list. There's a daily happy hour, and the people-watching from the patio is half the draw.
