Detroit, Michigan
Detroit's oldest gay-owned bar on W. Warren Ave, open since 1973
Open since 1973, four years after Stonewall, Gigi's is Detroit's oldest gay-owned bar, according to Detroit PBS and local press. The two-level West Warren Avenue spot runs a cabaret and drag stage downstairs and a dance floor upstairs, and it's home to Miss Gigi's, reported as the oldest gay-bar drag title in the country, born from a 1973 Halloween workaround for anti-crossdressing laws. Nickki Stevens was crowned Miss Gigi's in 1992 and has directed the cabaret shows ever since. Current owner Luis Mandujano, a regular since the '90s, bought the bar in 2020. The room draws a primarily Black, multigenerational LGBTQ+ crowd from the west side, and it welcomes 18-and-up. F-You Fridays and Saturday drag shows fill the weekend, with Sunday karaoke to close it out. Cash only, and proudly so.
