Detroit's longest-running gay nightclub in Palmer Park, open since 1974
Open since 1974, Menjo's is the last bar still standing from Palmer Park's 1970s gay heyday, and one of Detroit's oldest. The complex spreads across three connected buildings: a main dance floor still turning under its original 1976 disco ball, the Detroit Eagle leather bar, and Olympus Hall, which hosts drag shows and Rocky Horror screenings. A teenage Madonna danced here in the late '70s with her ballet teacher Christopher Flynn, under that same disco ball, and it's widely cited as the first gay bar she ever set foot in. Local lore adds that the building once held a supper club where Al Capone supposedly dined. The crowd skews gay men but everyone's welcome, and the energy is old-school dance club: live DJs, themed nights most evenings, karaoke, and weekend underwear contests. Menjo's also runs a charity called Beautiful that hands out food and clothing every Tuesday to anyone who needs it. It's less a polished nightclub than a Detroit institution that has outlasted everything around it.
