Indianapolis, Indiana
Gay bar anchoring Indy's Mass Ave arts district since 1990
Metro has anchored Indianapolis's Mass Ave arts district since opening on New Year's Eve 1990, making it one of the longest-running gay bars in Indiana. The 7,200-square-foot space runs on two levels: the ground floor is a restaurant and bar with pub food, a fenced outdoor patio, and one of Indy's longest-running karaoke shows (Tuesday and Thursday nights, 10pm). Upstairs, The Second Story has pool tables, darts, and a jukebox on weeknights — then converts to Mass Ave's only dance club with a DJ on Friday and Saturday. Gay-owned and operated continuously for 35 years, Metro has passed through three owners who each committed to preserving its identity. Current owner Bill Pritt (who also sits as board president of the Damien Center, Indianapolis's AIDS service organization) bought the historic 1874 Knauf Block building in 2024. The bar partners with Damien Center for free community health resources every Thursday night.
