Saugatuck, Michigan
Douglas garden honoring Saugatuck's LGBTQ+ community pioneers
A beautiful, blooming garden in downtown Douglas that honors the deep roots of the LGBTQ+ community in the Saugatuck/Douglas area. Located at 147 West Center Street — right across from the Saugatuck-Douglas History Center — this quiet, reflective space pays tribute to the pioneers who helped build this community into one of the most welcoming destinations in the Midwest. The garden honors Larry Gammons and Carl Jennings, the founders of The Dunes Resort, among other local LGBTQ+ leaders. It's a meaningful stop before or after visiting the History Center's "A Century of Progress: 100 Years of LGBTQ History" exhibition, which chronicles the challenges, triumphs, and evolution of queer life in these twin Lake Michigan towns from the early 1900s to today.
