Subscribe NowProvincetown doesn't have a gay bar district. The entire town is the district. In a community of 3,000 year-round residents where LGBTQ+ people are the majority, every bar, restaurant, and coffee shop operates as a queer space by default. But that doesn't mean all bars are created equal — P-Town's nightlife scene ranges from one of the oldest gay bars in America to poolside afternoon dance parties, basement clubs, leather bars, and cabaret stages that book nationally known performers.
The best part? Everything is on one street. Commercial Street is the artery, and you can walk from one end of P-Town's bar scene to the other in 20 minutes. Here's every LGBTQ+ bar and club you need to know, plus the restaurants, performance venues, and late-night spots that round out a night (or afternoon) in America's queerest small town.
Pro Tip
Everything in Provincetown is on or just off Commercial Street — the town's only real road. All the bars listed here are within a 15-minute walk of each other. No rideshare needed, no designated driver required. Just walk.
1. The Boatslip Resort & Beach Club — Tea Dance
161 Commercial Street · Waterfront resort & pool deck · Home of Tea Dance
The Boatslip is the single most important venue in Provincetown — not because of the rooms or the pool, but because of Tea Dance. Every afternoon from roughly 4-7 PM during the summer season, hundreds of people pack the outdoor pool deck for DJs, cocktails, and dancing in golden-hour sunlight. Tea Dance has been running since the 1960s and is arguably the most iconic LGBTQ+ social gathering in the country.
This isn't a bar you drop by for a quick drink. Tea Dance is a daily ritual — the thing that structures every P-Town afternoon. You go to the beach, you come to Tea Dance, you go to dinner, you go to the shows, you go dancing. Every day. It's the heartbeat.
- Don't miss: Tea Dance, obviously. Arrive by 4 PM for a good spot. The energy peaks around 5:30 PM when the DJ locks in and the crowd swells. Weekends during Bear Week and Carnival are the peak experiences.
- Good to know: Cover charge varies (typically $10-20). Dress code is summer casual — swimsuits, tank tops, and sunglasses are standard. Guests of the Boatslip get free admission.
Pro Tip
Tea Dance is non-negotiable. Even if you're not a daytime drinker, even if you don't dance, even if you arrived in P-Town 30 minutes ago — go to Tea Dance. It's the defining experience of Provincetown and you'll understand why within 10 minutes of walking onto that pool deck.
2. The Crown & Anchor
247 Commercial Street · Multi-venue entertainment complex · P-Town's biggest night out
The Crown & Anchor is Provincetown's largest entertainment complex — part hotel, part bar empire, part drag palace, part dance club. Under one roof you'll find the Wave Bar (high-energy dance club with video screens and DJ sets), the Paramount (cabaret, comedy, and drag shows in a proper theater), a piano bar, and outdoor spaces that fill up on summer nights. It's where the biggest productions happen and where the most diverse crowd gathers.
Recently acquired by Tryst Hospitality with renovations underway, the Crown reopens for the 2026 season refreshed and ready. If the Boatslip is P-Town's afternoon, the Crown is its night.
- Don't miss: The Paramount hosts nationally known drag queens, comedians, and cabaret acts — check the schedule and buy tickets early for headliners. The Wave Bar is the go-to dance floor after 10 PM.
- Good to know: Six bars means you can find a different vibe without leaving the building. The outdoor spaces are prime for warm-weather people-watching.
3. A-House (Atlantic House)
6 Masonic Place · Historic bar & dance club · P-Town's oldest
The Atlantic House — universally known as the A-House — is Provincetown's oldest bar and one of the oldest gay bars in America. The original building dates to 1798. Tennessee Williams drank here. Eugene O'Neill staged plays steps away. It's been a gathering place for gay men since at least the 1950s, and it's still going.
Today the A-House is a multi-level complex: a main dance floor that pumps on weekends, a bar upstairs, and the Macho Bar downstairs (more on that below). The history is palpable, but the vibe is anything but musty — this is still where people dance until close.
- Don't miss: Weekend DJ sets on the main dance floor pack the room. The A-House is one of P-Town's only year-round venues — worth visiting even off-season.
- Good to know: Set back from Commercial Street on Masonic Place, so you might walk past it if you're not looking. Follow the music.
Pro Tip
The A-House is one of the few bars in Provincetown that stays open year-round. If you're visiting during the off-season (November-April), this and the Gifford House are your best bets for a night out.
4. Macho Bar at A-House
6 Masonic Place (downstairs) · Leather & bear bar
Downstairs at the Atlantic House, the Macho Bar is Provincetown's leather and bear bar — dark, cruisy, and unapologetically masculine. The space is compact, the lighting is low, and the vibe is exactly what you'd expect from a bar called "Macho." It's especially packed during Bear Week, Leather Weekends, and Carnival.
- Don't miss: Bear Week transforms the Macho Bar into ground zero for the bear community. Leather Weekend events are standouts.
- Good to know: The crowd skews bears, leather, and older men, but it's welcoming to anyone who respects the space. No dress code enforced, but you'll fit in better in a harness than a polo.
5. Purgatory at Gifford House
9 Carver Street · Late-night dance club · Basement vibes
Purgatory is where the night ends in Provincetown. Housed in the basement of the historic Gifford House (built 1858, now gay-owned), this dance club fires up after the other venues wind down. DJs spin house, pop, and electronic until close in a dark, sweaty, high-energy room. If you started your day at the beach, progressed through Tea Dance, had dinner, caught a show at the Crown, and ended up at Purgatory at 1 AM — congratulations, you've had a perfect P-Town day.
- Don't miss: Late-night is when Purgatory hits its stride — don't arrive before midnight. Theme nights rotate throughout the summer season.
- Good to know: The Gifford House is also a hotel, so you can literally stay above the dance floor. The Porch Bar upstairs is the pre-game.
Pro Tip
The classic P-Town night goes: Tea Dance (4-7 PM) → dinner → cabaret show (8-10 PM) → Crown or A-House (10 PM-1 AM) → Purgatory (1 AM-close) → Spiritus Pizza (after close). Pace yourself — it's a marathon, not a sprint.
6. Porch Bar at Gifford House
9 Carver Street · Outdoor bar & people-watching · The pre-game
Before Purgatory goes off in the basement, the Porch Bar upstairs is one of P-Town's most popular gathering spots. Grab a cocktail, settle into a seat on the porch, and watch Commercial Street's endless parade of drag queens, bears, families, and artists. The porch fills fast on summer evenings, so arrive early if you want a seat — or stand and mingle, which is half the fun.
- Don't miss: The porch is the social nerve center of P-Town evenings. This is where plans for the rest of the night get made.
- Good to know: No cover. The drinks are strong and the people-watching is world-class.
7. Shipwreck Lounge
2 Mechanic Street · Cocktail bar · Intimate & chill
Shipwreck is P-Town's cocktail bar — a more intimate, conversation-friendly alternative to the high-energy dance venues. The drink program is a cut above the standard bar fare, the vibe is relaxed, and the crowd is mixed across age, gender, and energy level. It's the perfect early-evening spot before heading to bigger venues, or the place you end up when you want to actually talk to someone.
- Don't miss: The cocktail menu — this isn't a vodka-soda bar. Ask the bartender for a recommendation.
- Good to know: One of the few P-Town bars with a real cocktail focus. Great for dates and catching up with friends.

8. The Monkey Bar
Commercial Street · Bar · Social & fun
A newer addition to P-Town's bar lineup that's quickly found its footing. The Monkey Bar offers cocktails, a social atmosphere, and queer-owned energy that fits right into the Commercial Street ecosystem. It fills the niche between cocktail lounge and dance bar — expect good drinks, a friendly crowd, and the kind of spontaneous energy that makes bar-hopping in P-Town an adventure.
- Don't miss: Summer evenings when the energy is up and the crowd spills out.
- Good to know: Queer-owned and operated. A solid mid-evening stop on any Commercial Street crawl.
9. Red Room
Commercial Street · Bar · DJ nights & late-night energy
The Red Room is P-Town's wilder card — a smaller venue that hosts DJ nights, go-go dancers, and themed parties. It's the kind of bar you end up at after midnight when you're not ready for the night to end but want something different from Purgatory or the A-House. The intimate size means the energy gets concentrated fast.
- Don't miss: Themed party nights — check local listings for the week's schedule.
- Good to know: Smaller space, so it fills up quickly. That's part of the appeal.
10. Aqua Bar
207 Commercial Street · Waterfront bar · Sunset cocktails
Aqua Bar brings a more polished, upscale energy to P-Town's bar scene. Waterfront views, well-made cocktails, and an atmosphere that leans more lounge than party. It's the sunset drink spot — the kind of place where you sit with a cocktail and watch the harbor while the rest of town gears up for the evening.
- Don't miss: Sunset drinks on the waterfront. The light on the harbor is spectacular.
- Good to know: Draws a mixed crowd of locals and visitors. More relaxed than the dance venues — a good date spot.
11. Harbor Lounge
359 Commercial Street · Cocktail lounge · Sophisticated & cozy
The Harbor Lounge is P-Town's upscale cocktail destination — craft cocktails, harbor views, and an atmosphere designed for conversation rather than dancing. If you want to dress up slightly and sip something well-made in a beautiful setting, this is your spot. The crowd skews slightly older and more polished than the dance clubs.
- Don't miss: The harbor view and the cocktail program. This is where you go for a proper drink.
- Good to know: Perfect for a date night or a quiet drink before the main event. Not a late-night spot.
12. Provincetown Brewing Co.
141 Bradford Street · Craft brewery · Afternoon vibes
P-Town's craft brewery offers house-brewed beers, a lively taproom, and regular events. It's queer-friendly by default (everything in P-Town is) and serves as the town's daytime social hub for people who want good beer in a casual setting. The outdoor space is perfect for afternoon beers between the beach and dinner.
- Don't miss: Flight of house-brewed beers to find your favorite. Community events and pop-ups happen regularly.
- Good to know: One block off Commercial Street on Bradford. A welcome change of pace from the cocktail-and-dance circuit.
Pro Tip
Drinks in Provincetown are resort-priced — expect $14-18 cocktails at most bars. Provincetown Brewing Co. offers better value on pints, and happy hours at several bars (check daily listings) can save you a few dollars. The Underground and Harbor Lounge often have early-evening specials.
Beyond the Bars — Entertainment & Performance
Provincetown's nightlife isn't just about drinking — the cabaret, drag, and performance scene is world-class.
Live at The Art House
P-Town's premier performance venue books nationally known LGBTQ+ comedians, drag artists, musicians, and cabaret performers for the summer season. Past performers have included Lea DeLaria, Bianca Del Rio, Varla Jean Merman, and Dina Martina. The programming is stacked from June through September, and popular shows sell out — buy tickets early.
Post Office Cafe & Cabaret
Dinner and a show in the most literal sense — the downstairs is a restaurant with solid food, and the upstairs cabaret hosts drag performances, comedy, and live music. It's LGBTQ+-owned and one of the best ways to combine a meal with entertainment. Book dinner early during peak weeks.
The Spiritus Pizza Ritual
After the bars close, the entire town converges on Spiritus Pizza (190 Commercial Street) for late-night slices. This isn't just a pizza shop — it's the unofficial final act of every P-Town night out, and has been for decades. The sidewalk outside Spiritus at 1 AM is one of the most social spaces in town. It's also the site of the historic 1990 Spiritus Riot, when the arrest of a drag performer sparked a confrontation that led to reforms in the Provincetown Police Department.
Pro Tip
Spiritus Pizza after the bars close is a Provincetown institution. Even if you're not hungry, walk by around 1 AM on a summer night — the energy on the sidewalk is unlike anything else. It's the town's unofficial living room.

The Underground & Grotta Bar
Two LGBTQ+-friendly bars that round out the scene:
The Underground Provincetown
A below-street-level bar that adds variety to the Commercial Street lineup. DJs, themed nights, and a crowd that appreciates a different atmosphere from the main venues.
Grotta Bar
A casual, cave-like bar space offering a more relaxed drinking experience. Good for a low-key drink when the main circuit feels too intense.
Which Bar Is Right for You?
Not sure where to start? Here's the cheat sheet:
- I want to dance. Crown & Anchor Wave Bar (biggest dance floor), A-House (historic + packed), Purgatory (late-night basement vibes)
- I want a chill drink. Shipwreck Lounge (craft cocktails), Harbor Lounge (upscale + views), Aqua Bar (waterfront sunset)
- I want the quintessential P-Town experience. Tea Dance at the Boatslip. Period.
- I want drag and cabaret. Crown & Anchor Paramount, Art House, Post Office Cabaret
- I want leather/bears. Macho Bar at A-House (the only answer)
- I want late-night. Purgatory (last dance floor standing), then Spiritus Pizza
- I want beer, not cocktails. Provincetown Brewing Co.
- I'm on a date. Harbor Lounge (upscale), Shipwreck (intimate), Aqua Bar (waterfront sunset)
- I want people-watching. Porch Bar at Gifford House (front-row Commercial Street)
Is Provincetown's Bar Scene Seasonal?
Mostly, yes. The full P-Town experience runs from Memorial Day weekend (late May) through Labor Day (early September), with peak energy during Bear Week (July), Carnival (August), and Pride (June). During this window, everything is open, programming is stacked, and the town is at maximum capacity.
In shoulder season (May, September-October), many bars are open but with reduced hours and lighter crowds. Some venues like the A-House and Gifford House stay open year-round. Off-season (November-April), options are limited — but the year-round community keeps a few spots alive, and events like Holly Folly (December) and Snowbound Leather Weekend (February) bring seasonal energy.
Can I Do a Bar Crawl in Provincetown?
You almost can't avoid one. Everything is on Commercial Street, and the walkability means bar-hopping is the default mode. Here are some suggested routes:
- Classic P-Town evening: Porch Bar (pre-game) → Crown & Anchor show (cabaret) → A-House (dancing) → Purgatory (late-night) → Spiritus (pizza)
- Cocktail crawl: Shipwreck → Harbor Lounge → Aqua Bar → Monkey Bar
- Full P-Town day: Beach → Boatslip Tea Dance (4-7 PM) → dinner → Art House show → Crown Wave Bar → Purgatory → Spiritus
- Bear/leather night: Macho Bar → Purgatory → A-House dance floor
- Chill afternoon: Provincetown Brewing Co. → Porch Bar → Tea Dance
Are There Lesbian Bars in Provincetown?
There isn't a dedicated lesbian bar, but Provincetown's bar scene is genuinely inclusive — queer women are a huge part of the community, not an afterthought. During Girl Splash (July), Single Women's Weekend (May), Women's Week (October), and Lesbian Visibility Week (April), the entire town's nightlife caters to queer women. Womencrafts (a feminist bookstore since 1976) is a community hub, and the Boatslip, Crown & Anchor, and A-House all host women's events during theme weeks.
What Time Do Bars Close in Provincetown?
Massachusetts bar closing time is 2 AM. Most bars in P-Town stay open until close during peak season. Purgatory and the A-House tend to be the last venues standing. After that, everyone goes to Spiritus.
Provincetown's bar scene is small enough to know everyone and deep enough to surprise you every night. Whether you're dancing at Tea Dance in the afternoon sun, catching a world-class drag show at the Crown, or grabbing a 1 AM slice at Spiritus surrounded by new friends — P-Town nightlife is unlike anywhere else on earth.
