Conch Republic Independence Celebration is Key West's most gleefully absurd party — 10 days commemorating the day in 1982 when Key West declared independence from the United States in protest of a federal border checkpoint. The island "seceded," declared war, surrendered one minute later, and demanded a billion dollars in foreign aid. None of it was serious. All of it was very Key West.
More than four decades later, the celebration has grown into a citywide festival with a parade, a mock naval battle, a drag queen look-a-like contest, a Royal Family coronation, and enough pub crawls, pool parties, and drag shows to keep the island lit for 10 straight days. Because this is Key West — where the mayor might be in drag and the Secretary General hosts cabaret on Duval — the entire celebration is queer-forward by default. You won't find a "gay section." The whole thing is the gay section.
This guide covers what to expect, where to party, and how to do Conch Republic like a local.
Conch Republic 2026 Highlights Calendar
The Conch Republic schedule shifts slightly each year and the official lineup drops on conchrepublic.com closer to the date. These are the signature events you can count on across the 10-day stretch — plan around them, then fill in the gaps with bar crawls, drag shows, and pool time.
- Friday, April 17 — Opening Night: The celebration kicks off with opening ceremonies, bar events along Duval Street, and early pub crawls. Rainbow and Conch Republic flags go up across Old Town and the first themed drag shows hit the stages at 801 Bourbon and Aqua.
- Saturday, April 18 — Royal Family Coronation: The Royal Family — including the Prime Minister, Secretary General, and Minister of Culture — is coronated in a ceremony that is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. Expect sashes, crowns, and a lot of drag energy.
- Sunday, April 19 — Pool Parties & Pub Crawls: Island House, Bourbon Street Pub, and other LGBTQ+ guesthouses run pool events. The Secretary General's Pub Crawl hits multiple Duval Street bars with costumed crews in tow.
- Monday-Wednesday, April 20-22 — Mid-Week Festivities: Cabaret performances at La Te Da's Crystal Room, themed drag nights, community events, and the Drag Queen Look-a-Like contest — a Conch Republic institution that draws the island's best performers.
- Thursday, April 23 — Independence Day: The actual anniversary of the 1982 secession. Expect flag-raising ceremonies, Navy-vs-Conch-Republic "negotiations," and every bar on Duval running Conch Republic specials all day.
- Friday, April 24 — Great Sea Battle Weekend Kickoff: Pre-battle pub crawls, bar events, and parties build anticipation for Saturday's signature event.
- Saturday, April 25 — The Great Sea Battle: The biggest event of the week. Fire boats, shrimp boats, and schooners face off in Key West Harbor with water cannons and conch fritters flying. Best watched from Schooner Wharf Bar or the waterfront.
- Sunday, April 26 — Closing Day Parade & Afterparties: The Conch Republic Parade winds through Old Town, followed by afterparties at every gay bar on Duval. The celebration doesn't so much end as dissolve into another regular Key West night.
Pro Tip
Download the official schedule at conchrepublic.com about two weeks before the celebration — individual event times, ticket links, and any venue changes drop there first. Print a copy (or screenshot it) because cell service on Duval gets patchy when the bars fill up.
The Great Sea Battle — Saturday, April 25
The Great Sea Battle is Conch Republic's most famous event and the one you absolutely do not want to miss. It's a mock naval engagement staged in Key West Harbor between the "Conch Republic Navy" (a loose coalition of local fire boats, shrimp boats, and schooners) and the "invading forces" (usually a US Coast Guard cutter playing along in good humor). Instead of cannonballs, the weapons of war are water cannons, Cuban bread loaves, and conch fritters.
It is as wonderfully absurd as it sounds. Boats soak each other, the crowd on shore cheers, and the mock battle always ends with Conch Republic victorious — because of course it does.
Where to Watch
- Schooner Wharf Bar — The unofficial command center. The battle unfolds directly in front of the bar, and the deck fills up by late morning. Arrive by 10 AM to claim a waterfront spot.
- Key West Bight waterfront — Free standing-room along the boardwalk. Less comfortable but you get a great view of the action.
- Sunset Pier at Ocean Key Resort — Paid access, but air-conditioned options and a clear waterfront view.
- On a boat — The best way to see it. Blu Q Catamaran and other LGBTQ+ charters often run Sea Battle viewing trips. Book early.
Timeline
- 10 AM-12 PM: Crowds gather at Schooner Wharf. Pre-battle drinks and lunch. The Conch Republic Navy parades into position.
- 12-1 PM: Battle commences. Water cannons, Cuban bread projectiles, chaos, laughter, surrender and counter-surrender.
- 1-3 PM: Post-battle parties spill across the waterfront. Schooner Wharf fills up, live music starts, and the celebration rolls into the afternoon.
- Evening: The energy shifts back to Duval Street for drag shows, pool parties, and bar events.
Pro Tip
If you can swing it, watch the Sea Battle from the water. LGBTQ+ sailing charters like Blu Q Catamaran run special Conch Republic trips that position you right in the action — close enough to get splashed by a water cannon if the wind's right. It's the most memorable way to experience the battle.
Conch Republic Parade — Sunday, April 26
The Conch Republic Parade is the celebration's closing event and the single wildest parade you'll see in Key West outside of Fantasy Fest. It's a mix of Conch Republic Navy veterans, the Royal Family, drag queens, krewes, marching bands, local bars and guesthouses, motorcycle clubs, and whoever else shows up in costume. There are no corporate floats. There are definitely no sponsor banners. What you get instead is a parade that feels like the entire island dressed up and wandered into the street.
Parade Route
The route typically runs through Old Town, following Duval Street and adjacent blocks. Exact details vary year to year — check conchrepublic.com for the 2026 confirmed route. What you can count on:
- It moves slowly through the 700-900 block of Duval Street — the heart of the LGBTQ+ scene
- It passes in front of Bourbon Street Pub, Aqua Bar, and 801 Bourbon Bar
- The bars along the route become de facto viewing stands, with drinks, music, and drag queens waving from balconies
Best Viewing Spots
- Upper Duval Street (700-900 block) — The energy peak. Gay bars line the street, their patios spill onto the sidewalk, and drag performers work the crowd. This is where you want to be.
- Bourbon Street Pub patio — The open-air garden bar has clear sightlines to Duval. Get a drink, get a spot, stay all afternoon.
- La Te Da balcony — If you can snag a room or table at La Te Da, the second-floor view of the parade is unbeatable.
- Lower Duval near Mallory Square — Less crowded, good for families and anyone who wants room to breathe.
Parade Day Tips
- Arrive 60-90 minutes early. Duval Street gets packed well before the parade reaches the upper blocks.
- Hydrate. April in Key West is warmer than visitors expect. Drink water between cocktails.
- Wear costume. Not required, but you'll feel underdressed in regular clothes. Pirate, Navy, drag, rainbow — anything goes.
- Bring cash. Street vendors and some bars prefer cash, and ATMs on Duval get ugly lines on parade day.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, hat. The parade runs in the afternoon and there's not much shade on Duval.
Pro Tip
Turn the parade into a bar crawl. Start at La Te Da on lower Duval, catch the parade passing, then move north with the crowd — stopping at Bourbon Street Pub, Aqua, and 801 Bourbon. By the time you hit upper Duval, the parade's over and the afterparties are in full swing. Total walking distance: about 10 minutes end to end.
Drag, Cabaret & the Look-a-Like Contest
Drag is woven into every single day of Conch Republic — not as a sideshow but as the main event. Key West's drag scene runs year-round at a level that rivals much bigger cities, and Conch Republic is when the queens turn it up to 11.
Drag Queen Look-a-Like Contest
One of Conch Republic's most beloved traditions. Performers compete to out-drag each other in look-a-like categories — sometimes impersonating celebrities, sometimes the Royal Family, sometimes each other. The contest rotates venues (often La Te Da or 801 Bourbon) and draws a huge crowd. Check conchrepublic.com for the 2026 date and venue. Arrive at least 45 minutes early — seating disappears fast.
Nightly Drag at 801 Bourbon Bar
801 Bourbon's drag shows are a Key West institution, running nightly year-round in the upstairs cabaret room. During Conch Republic, the shows add themed numbers, guest performers, and Conch Republic-specific bits. Shows typically start at 9 PM and fill up by 8:30. Grab dinner first, then head up early.
The Aquanettes at Aqua Bar
Aqua's resident drag troupe, the Aquanettes, run nightly shows that are loud, campy, and absolutely packed during Conch Republic. Aqua is the closest Key West gets to a big-city gay club, and during Conch Republic the energy rivals anything you'd find in Miami or Atlanta.
La Te Da Cabaret
La Te Da's Crystal Room hosts the island's most sophisticated drag and cabaret experience — think live singing, torch songs, Broadway numbers, and legendary queens who've been working the room for decades. During Conch Republic, the Crystal Room adds extra shows and themed nights. This is the drag experience to book tickets for in advance.
Pro Tip
Do a drag triple-header in one night: early cabaret at La Te Da, then 801 Bourbon at 9 PM, then Aqua's Aquanettes at 11. All three venues are within a 10-minute walk on Duval Street. You'll see three completely different styles of drag without moving more than a few blocks.
Best Bars & Parties During Conch Republic
Key West's gay bars are all within a few blocks on and around Duval Street. During Conch Republic, every single one runs special events, themed nights, drink specials, and costume parties. You can walk the entire scene in under 15 minutes.
Bourbon Street Pub
The anchor of the Duval Street gay scene. The open-air garden bar and clothing-optional pool are the heart of Conch Republic daytime energy — expect pool parties most afternoons, with DJs, themed drinks, and a crowd that spans locals, guesthouse guests, and visitors from across the country. Connected to New Orleans House above, which means you can roll from the pool to your room to the bar without ever leaving the complex.
Aqua Bar and Nightclub
Key West's premier nightclub goes full throttle for Conch Republic. Drag shows, DJ sets, dance parties, and patio crowds spilling onto Duval Street. Friday and Saturday nights of the celebration are peak energy.
801 Bourbon Bar
Legendary drag cabaret on Duval. The upstairs room hosts nightly shows that pack out during Conch Republic. Downstairs, the front bar is one of the best people-watching spots on the street.
One Saloon
The locals' bar on Petronia Street, off Duval. This is where you'll find Key West's year-round LGBTQ+ regulars during Conch Republic — pool tables, strong drinks, and the kind of neighborhood energy the Duval megabars can't match.
Graffiti Key West
Stylish cocktail bar for when you need a break from the high-volume party venues. Craft drinks, lower volume, good for starting the evening before hitting Duval.
Sidebar Club 504
Community-focused bar on Angela Street with Conch Republic programming and themed nights. A mellower, more conversational spot than the Duval megabars.
Bobby's Monkey Bar
Casual neighborhood favorite. Good pit stop during a bar crawl — unpretentious, friendly, and reliably fun.

Pool Parties & Daytime Scene
Conch Republic happens in April — the weather is actually perfect (unlike Fantasy Fest in October or Pride in June). Highs are in the low-to-mid 80s, humidity is tolerable, and the pools are the center of gravity for daytime celebrating.
Island House Pool Parties
The island's premier men's resort turns up the volume during Conch Republic. Daily pool events, DJs, social hours, and an atmosphere that's part resort, part community celebration. Men only. Day passes are usually available to non-guests — check at the front desk.
Bourbon Street Pub Pool
The clothing-optional garden and pool behind Bourbon Street Pub run daily events during Conch Republic. This is the mixed, everyone-welcome counterpart to Island House's men-only scene. DJs, drink specials, and a crowd that doesn't clear out until well after dark.
Higgs Beach
Key West's LGBTQ+-friendly beach and the daytime recovery zone. Volleyball, swimming, and rainbow crowds. The AIDS Memorial here is worth 10 minutes of your attention — it's one of the most powerful LGBTQ+ landmarks in the country.
Fort Zachary Taylor Beach
The best snorkeling on the island. Walk to the far left side for the unofficial gay section (locally nicknamed "Fort Liz Taylor"). Quieter than Higgs and better for swimming.
Pro Tip
April is the single best month to visit Key West. You get peak winter weather without the winter prices, perfect pool temps, minimal rain, and Conch Republic on top of it. If you've been putting off a Key West trip, this is the week.
Where to Stay for Conch Republic
Conch Republic is busy but not sold-out the way Pride (June) or Fantasy Fest (October) are. You can usually find rooms 2-3 weeks out, though LGBTQ+ guesthouses still book up first. Book 3-4 weeks ahead for the best selection.
LGBTQ+ Guesthouses
These put you inside the celebration. The pool parties happen at your hotel, the other guests become your Conch Republic crew, and you're a 5-minute walk from every event.
Island House — The island's premier gay men's resort. Clothing-optional pool, hot tub, gym, and social events. During Conch Republic, Island House is the center of the men's daytime scene. Book early — even in April, this sells out.
Alexander's LGBTQIA+ Guesthouse — The rare Key West guesthouse that explicitly welcomes the entire LGBTQ+ community, not just men. Beautiful gardens, heated pool, and a 5-minute walk to Duval. The best option for lesbian, trans, and non-binary travelers who want an immersive guesthouse experience.
New Orleans House — Clothing-optional, adults-only, and directly above Bourbon Street Pub. You literally cannot be closer to the action. The rooftop sundeck has views of Duval Street and the pool below.
La Te Da — Historic guesthouse with the legendary Crystal Room cabaret downstairs. Staying here means rolling out of bed into drag shows and Conch Republic events without ever crossing the street.
Hotels Near the Action
For travelers who prefer a traditional hotel experience, these are walking distance to Duval Street and Schooner Wharf:
- The Marker Waterfront Resort — Upscale harbor-front hotel with rooftop pool, walking distance to the Sea Battle viewing spots and Duval.
- Hyatt Centric Key West — Modern hotel on Duval Street with a rooftop pool and bar. You'll hear the parade from your room.
- Margaritaville Beach House Resort — Full resort amenities, beach access, short walk to the action.
- Ocean Key Resort — Sunset Pier location puts you at the water's edge for the Great Sea Battle.
Budget Tips
- New Town hotels off Duval are a short bike ride from the action at much lower rates.
- Vacation rentals in Old Town — check VRBO and Airbnb, book early.
- Stock Island (just over the bridge) has the Perry Hotel and cheaper options for travelers willing to rideshare in.
Pro Tip
Conch Republic is April, not June — rates are noticeably lower than Pride or Fantasy Fest, and the weather is actually better. If budget matters, this is the best time to do Key West. Book a guesthouse like Alexander's or New Orleans House while they're still around $200-300/night, which is a steal for this island.

Getting There and Getting Around
Getting to Key West
- By Air: Key West International Airport (EYW) has direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, and other hubs. The airport is 10 minutes from Old Town by cab or rideshare.
- By Car: 3.5-4 hours from Miami via US-1, the Overseas Highway — 42 bridges, turquoise water, and the Seven Mile Bridge. One of the most scenic drives in America. Leave early on Friday, April 17, to avoid weekend traffic into the Keys.
- By Ferry: The Key West Express runs from Fort Myers Beach — a 3.5-hour cruise across the Gulf of Mexico. A fun alternative to driving or flying.
Getting Around During Conch Republic
- Walk. Duval Street is about a mile long and everything happens on it or within a block of it. You won't need transportation between bars, the parade route, and the Sea Battle.
- Bike. The best way to get around Key West year-round. Rental shops are everywhere ($15-25/day). Lock up when you hit Duval — bike theft spikes during busy events.
- Scooter. Fun for trips to beaches or outlying restaurants, but not necessary for Conch Republic events.
- No car needed. Parking during the celebration is a nightmare. If you drove to Key West, park at your hotel and leave it there all week.
Road Closures
Duval Street and adjacent blocks close for the parade on Sunday, April 26. The Schooner Wharf area gets crowded during the Great Sea Battle on Saturday, April 25 — plan to walk or bike in. Expect limited parking near event zones all week.
Pro Tip
Rent a bike for the full 10 days. Key West is flat, small, and bike-friendly. You can ride from your hotel to Higgs Beach in the morning, Schooner Wharf for the Sea Battle, Mallory Square at sunset, and Duval Street at night without ever calling an Uber.
Practical Tips for First-Timers
- Pace yourself. Ten days is a long celebration. If you try to peak on Day 1 you won't make it to the parade. Aim for 2-3 big events per day and build in pool/beach recovery time.
- Costumes are encouraged. Not required, but the island is in full pirate-Navy-drag regalia and you'll feel underdressed without something playful. Throw a Conch Republic t-shirt and some rainbow beads in your bag and you're covered.
- Bring sunscreen. April sun in Key West is sneakier than you think. SPF 30 minimum, reapply after pool time.
- Check event tickets in advance. Some drag shows, cabaret performances, and pool parties have cover charges or require tickets. Check conchrepublic.com and individual venue sites before you arrive.
- Respect the locals. Conch Republic started as a local protest and it's still, at its core, a local celebration. Tip well, be friendly, and don't treat the island like a theme park.
- Cash is still useful. Most places take cards, but street vendors, some bar patios, and pub crawl venues run cash-only at peak times.

When is Conch Republic Independence Celebration 2026?
Conch Republic Independence Celebration 2026 runs Friday, April 17 through Sunday, April 26, 2026 — a 10-day festival in Key West, Florida. The actual Independence Day anniversary is Thursday, April 23 (commemorating the 1982 "secession" from the United States). The Great Sea Battle falls on Saturday, April 25, and the Conch Republic Parade closes the celebration on Sunday, April 26. Official schedule updates post at conchrepublic.com.
Is Conch Republic a gay event?
Conch Republic isn't officially a Pride event, but Key West is one of the gayest towns in America and the celebration is gay-forward in every way that matters. The LGBTQ+ scene on Duval Street hosts a large share of the parties. Drag queens are central to the programming, including the Drag Queen Look-a-Like Contest. The gay bars (Bourbon Street Pub, Aqua, 801 Bourbon, La Te Da) are Conch Republic's unofficial headquarters. Gay guesthouses run pool parties all week. For LGBTQ+ travelers, Conch Republic feels like a 10-day Pride with pirate costumes.
What is the Great Sea Battle?
The Great Sea Battle is Conch Republic's signature event — a mock naval engagement staged in Key West Harbor where local fire boats, shrimp boats, and schooners face off with water cannons and food-based "projectiles" (Cuban bread, conch fritters). It's a reenactment of Key West's 1982 "war" against the United States, always ends with Conch Republic victorious, and is genuinely hilarious to watch. In 2026, the Sea Battle falls on Saturday, April 25. Best viewing is from Schooner Wharf Bar or on a boat charter.
Why is Conch Republic a thing?
In April 1982, the US Border Patrol set up a checkpoint on US-1 between Key West and the mainland, ostensibly to catch drug smugglers and undocumented immigrants. It crippled Key West's tourism economy. Locals, fed up with being treated like a foreign country, declared that if they were going to be treated like one, they'd become one. On April 23, 1982, Key West "seceded," declared war on the United States (by breaking a loaf of Cuban bread over a Navy officer's head), surrendered one minute later, and demanded a billion dollars in foreign aid. None of it was legally real. All of it was a brilliant PR stunt. The checkpoint came down, the tourists came back, and Conch Republic became an annual celebration.
Where should I stay for Conch Republic?
LGBTQ+ guesthouses are the most immersive experience. Island House (men's resort), Alexander's LGBTQIA+ Guesthouse (all-inclusive community), New Orleans House (above Bourbon Street Pub), and La Te Da (attached to Crystal Room cabaret) are the top picks. For hotels, the Marker Waterfront Resort, Hyatt Centric Key West, and Margaritaville Beach House are all walking distance to Duval. Budget travelers should check New Town hotels, Stock Island's Perry Hotel, or vacation rentals via VRBO and Airbnb.
How does Conch Republic compare to Key West Pride and Fantasy Fest?
Three different vibes on the same island. Conch Republic (April) is the most laid-back of the three, with the best weather and the lowest prices — heavy on parades, drag, and pirate costumes. Key West Pride (June) is the warmest and most explicitly LGBTQ+, with the famous evening Pride parade and Sea-to-Sea Rainbow Flag tradition. Fantasy Fest (October) is the wildest and most hedonistic, with body paint, masquerade balls, and week-long bacchanalia. If you can only do one, pick based on weather preference and how wild you want the scene: Conch Republic is the easy-mode entry point, Fantasy Fest is advanced placement.
Are there tickets for Conch Republic events?
Most street-level Conch Republic events are free — the parade, the Sea Battle viewing from the waterfront, bar events on Duval, and the flag-raising ceremonies. Some specific events have tickets: the Drag Queen Look-a-Like Contest, boat charters for Sea Battle viewing, certain pool parties at LGBTQ+ guesthouses, and cabaret shows at La Te Da. Check conchrepublic.com and individual venue sites for ticketed events.
Is Conch Republic family-friendly?
Daytime events — the Sea Battle, the parade, the flag-raisings, most Duval Street activities — are welcoming to all ages. Families do attend. After dark, Duval Street shifts adult, and many pool parties and drag shows are 21+ or men-only. Check individual event details before planning around kids.
What should I wear to Conch Republic?
Costume is encouraged but not required. Pirate, Conch Republic Navy (fake uniforms welcome), drag, rainbow, or just a Conch Republic t-shirt and beads — any of it works. For daytime, April Key West means shorts, tank tops, sandals, sunscreen, and a hat. For evening drag shows and bar events, lean into whatever makes you feel fabulous. The island has no dress code. It barely has rules.
Conch Republic is Key West at its most Key West — absurd, gay, hospitable, slightly unhinged, and completely committed to the bit. It's the kind of celebration that could only happen on a two-mile-long island at the edge of America, where the gay bars are the town square and the mayor might roast you in drag at the closing party. Come see what independence looks like when it's wearing a tiara.
