Part of the Gay Amsterdam Guide — bars, events & things to do.

Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam's dedicated lesbian and queer bar, rooted in De Pijp.
Bar Buka is one of Amsterdam's few dedicated lesbian and queer bars, on Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp — right on the street that hosts the largest daily outdoor market in the Netherlands. The name means “open” in Indonesian, which fits a room that's roughly 95% women but welcomes all genders and identities, with no dress code and no strict door. The walls carry rotating work by women artists in the community. The calendar is the heart of it: karaoke, queer bingo, a kinky women's munch, a queer craft circle, 35+ parties, DJ nights and sports broadcasts come and go through the month. It opens Thursday through Saturday evenings, and runs private events earlier in the week. For queer women in particular it's worth crossing town for. De Pijp is a draw in its own right, and Bar Buka gives the neighborhood a sapphic anchor the rest of the city's scene mostly lacks.
