Iconic clothing-optional gay beach at Torrey Pines, popular for decades.
Black's Beach — formally Torrey Pines City Beach and Torrey Pines State Beach — is the two-mile strip of sand below 300-foot sandstone cliffs at Torrey Pines, jointly owned by the City of San Diego and the State of California, and a gay beach for decades. The gay crowd gathers at the north end, where nudity is tolerated by long custom rather than formally designated — no signs mark it, but follow the shoreline north past the main trail and you'll know. Getting there takes effort. The city warns that access is very difficult because of the cliffs and unmaintained trails; the common route drops from the Torrey Pines Gliderport parking lot down a steep, sandy path. Wear real shoes, bring water, and pack everything you need: there are no restrooms, food vendors or shade on the beach itself, though it is one of nine city beaches with a permanent lifeguard station. Stay clear of the cliff base — the sandstone slides without warning. No dogs, alcohol or glass.
