Part of the Gay San Diego Guide — bars, events & things to do.

San Diego, California
Hillcrest gay dive bar with pool and a back patio, since 1981.
A Hillcrest fixture since 1981, Number One Fifth Avenue is the neighborhood’s classic gay dive: a narrow indoor bar that opens onto a generous back patio with a second bar and an outdoor pool table, so you’re never stuck fighting the crowd for a drink. Stiff pours and a core of regulars who’ve been propping up the bar for decades set the tone. It’s low-key where Rich’s and Urban MO’s down the street are loud, which is exactly the point. There’s a rotating slate of events (karaoke, Pictionary, Latin Night, game nights), but the bar works just as well as a daytime patio stop or a quiet first drink before the rest of the strip wakes up. A no-frills regulars’ bar in the heart of Hillcrest.
