Part of the Gay San Diego Guide — bars, events & things to do.

San Diego, California
Longtime downtown gay bar with vintage-cabaret charm.
The SRO Lounge — the name's short for Standing Room Only — is one of San Diego's longest-running gay bars, on Fifth Avenue downtown near Bankers Hill. The look is part vintage cabaret, part classic dive: deep red walls, chandeliers, mirrors, a jukebox, and pool tables, with affordable drinks and zero pretension. It's long been one of the most welcoming rooms in the city for trans patrons, and the crowd is an easy mix of gay, lesbian, straight, and trans regulars who keep the place feeling like a community living room. There's outdoor seating, a pool league that keeps things lively, and a regular calendar of drag nights. Away from the Hillcrest cluster, it's the downtown anchor worth the short trip.
