Part of the Gay San Diego Guide — bars, events & things to do.

San Diego, California
Point Loma cocktail lounge — San Diego's oldest gay bar, est. 1961.
Bar 1924 is the new name for a Point Loma institution that spent more than sixty years as The Hole — and it's San Diego's oldest gay bar, operating as one since 1961. The original opened in 1924 as The 19th Hole, a stop for golfers at the course that's now Liberty Station; a storm tore the '19' off the sign, and 'The Hole' stuck for decades. The bar turned 100 in 2024 and rebranded to Bar 1924 in early 2026 — same owners, same address, same liquor license, just a quieter, craft-cocktail-lounge chapter. For most of its life it was famous for big outdoor Beer Busts and barbecues in the beer garden, a relaxed counterpoint to the Hillcrest scene across town. The rebrand trades some of that rowdiness for a more low-key, cocktail-forward room, but the history — and the regulars — came along with it.
