San Diego, California
Laid-back Hillcrest queer dive with pool and karaoke.
The Loft is Hillcrest's low-key queer dive, the neighborhood bar locals default to when they want pool, karaoke, and a friendly room over a big scene. There's something on most nights, from karaoke to DJ sets and themed parties, and the bar recently added a separate room for dancing, giving it a little more range than its small footprint suggests. Strong, fair-priced drinks and bartenders who learn your name are the draw. It pulls smaller, warmer crowds than the marquee clubs a block away, which is exactly why its regulars are devoted. A solid first or last stop on a Fifth Avenue crawl, or the whole night if you'd rather settle in than bar-hop.
