Every September, the bears take Manhattan. Urban Bear NYC is New York's big bear-and-chaser weekend — four days of beer blasts, dance floors, rooftop socials, and one very sweaty Sunday street fair in the Meatpacking District. Now in its 18th year, it draws a furry, friendly, all-are-welcome crowd from across the country to the city's leather and bear bars.

This guide covers Urban Bear NYC 2026 from top to bottom: the weekend's marquee events, the Sunday street fair, the best bear bars to hit between parties, how to get around, and where to stay. Whether it's your first Urban Bear or your tenth, here's the game plan.

Urban Bear NYC 2026 Overview

  • Dates: Thursday, September 17 – Sunday, September 20, 2026 (18th annual)
  • Street Fair: Sunday, September 20, 1–7 PM on Little West 12th Street (between Washington St & 10th Ave), Meatpacking District — free
  • The format: Opening party Thursday, beer blasts and parties Friday–Saturday, the street fair and closing beer blast Sunday
  • Neighborhood: Meatpacking District & the West Village for the fair; Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen for the bars
  • Host: The Urban Bear (theurbanbear.com) — tickets and the finalized venue lineup drop closer to the weekend
  • Getting around: The subway is the move — no car needed in Manhattan
  • Crowd: Bears, cubs, chasers, and everyone who loves them — furry, friendly, and welcoming to first-timers

Urban Bear NYC 2026 Calendar

  • Thursday, September 17. The weekend kicks off with the Urban Bear Opening Party — the welcome night where the out-of-towners land and the weekend finds its feet.
  • Friday–Saturday, September 18–19. Peak weekend. The Grizzly Guzzler Beer Blast runs its daytime sessions, and Saturday night belongs to the Monster Underbear Party — the weekend's marquee dance floor.
  • Sunday, September 20. The main event: the Urban Bear NYC Street Fair takes over Little West 12th Street from 1–7 PM with DJs, vendors, and a mega beer blast to close the weekend out.

Pro Tip

Urban Bear is a Thursday-to-Sunday weekend, but Sunday's street fair is the anchor everyone builds around. If you're only in town for one day, make it Sunday — the fair runs 1–7 PM and flows straight into the closing beer blast.

The Urban Bear NYC Street Fair — Sunday, September 20

The Street Fair is Urban Bear's signature event and the reason a lot of people plan the trip. It takes over Little West 12th Street in the Meatpacking District — between Washington Street and 10th Avenue — from 1 PM to 7 PM, with guest DJs, vendors, and a crowd of bears packed shoulder to shoulder under the September sun.

What to Expect

  • DJs from 1–7 PM on an outdoor sound stage
  • Vendors and community tables — gear, merch, and local bear organizations
  • A mega beer blast running alongside the fair
  • The best people-watching in the city — this is the day the whole weekend converges on one block

It's free and open to all. Bring cash for drinks and vendors, sunscreen for the exposed block, and comfortable shoes — you'll be on your feet all afternoon.

Pro Tip

Little West 12th is a cobblestone Meatpacking block with almost no shade. Mid-September in New York can still hit the low 80s, so hydrate, sunscreen up, and stake out a spot near the stage early — the block fills fast once the DJs start.

The Parties & Beer Blasts

The fair is one afternoon, but Urban Bear is a full weekend of nightlife. Ticketing and the finalized venues are announced by The Urban Bear closer to the weekend — always confirm on the official ticket page before you buy.

Grizzly Guzzler Beer Blast

The Grizzly Guzzler is Urban Bear's daytime beer-blast tradition — cheap drafts, a packed bar, and the warm, low-key energy that makes a bear weekend feel like a reunion. It runs across the weekend and closes things out alongside Sunday's street fair.

Monster Underbear Party

The Monster Underbear Party is the weekend's big Saturday-night dance floor — DJs, go-gos, and a sweaty room full of bears going late. If you're picking one night to go all in, this is it.

Urban Bear Opening Party

The Opening Party on Thursday is the welcome night — a lower-key kickoff to meet up, catch up, and set the tone before the weekend goes full throttle.

Best Bear Bars & Nightlife

New York's bear and leather scene clusters in Chelsea and the West Village, with the wider gay-bar strip up in Hell's Kitchen. During Urban Bear weekend they all run extra programming — here's where the crowd goes.

The Bear & Leather Bars

The city's leather-and-bear anchors. Eagle NYC is the leather-and-Levi's institution and the natural home base for the weekend; Rockbar and Gym Sportsbar bring the West Village and Chelsea bear crowds; and the East Village dives keep the cruisy, come-as-you-are energy going late.

Near the Fair — the West Village

Steps from the Meatpacking fairgrounds, the historic West Village bars are perfect for a pre- or post-fair drink — Julius' (one of the city's oldest gay bars) and the Christopher Street strip are all right there.

Pro Tip

Eagle NYC is the anchor for Urban Bear weekend — if you're going to plant yourself at one bar between parties, make it the Eagle. It's the leather-and-bear home base and where a lot of the weekend's crowd ends up.

Where to Stay for Urban Bear

The fair is in the Meatpacking District, so a Chelsea or downtown hotel puts you closest to the action, while Hell's Kitchen / Midtown keeps you on the main bar strip with the most rooms to choose from. New York is a subway city, though, so anywhere in Manhattan works.

Near the Fair — Chelsea & Downtown

  • Moxy NYC Chelsea — the closest pick to the Meatpacking fairgrounds, with a lively lobby-and-rooftop bar scene.
  • citizenM New York Bowery — sleek, good-value downtown base, an easy ride to the West Village.

Hell's Kitchen & Midtown — On the Bar Strip

  • Arlo Midtown — a design-forward hotel in Hell's Kitchen, steps from the gay-bar strip.
  • citizenM Times Square — central and well-priced, a short ride to both the fair and the bars.

Airbnb & Vacation Rentals

Chelsea, the West Village, and Hell's Kitchen all have short-term-rental options if you'd rather have space and a kitchen — but Manhattan rentals go fast and aren't cheap, so book as soon as your dates are set.

Pro Tip

New York hotel rates swing hard by day of week and season. Urban Bear lands in peak fall travel, so book early — and if Manhattan is pricey, a hotel across the river in Downtown Brooklyn or Williamsburg (one subway stop from the West Village) can save you real money.

Getting There & Getting Around

The Subway (Best Option)

New York runs on the subway, and you won't need a car. For the Meatpacking street fair, the closest stops are 14th St / 8th Ave (A, C, E, L) and 14th St (1, 2, 3) — both a short walk to Little West 12th Street. Tap in with a credit card or phone via OMNY; there's no need for a MetroCard anymore.

For the Bars

  • Hell's Kitchen: 42nd St–Port Authority (A, C, E) or 50th St (C, E)
  • Chelsea (Eagle NYC): 23rd St (C, E) or the 7 to Hudson Yards
  • East Village: 1st Ave (L) or Astor Place (6)

From the Airports

  • JFK: AirTrain to the A/E subway, or a ~$60–75 rideshare into Manhattan (45–60 min)
  • LaGuardia: the Q70 bus to the subway, or a ~$40–55 rideshare (30–45 min)
  • Newark (EWR): AirTrain to NJ Transit into Penn Station, then the subway

Pro Tip

Skip the cabs between neighborhoods — the subway is faster than crawling through Manhattan traffic, especially on a weekend. The A/C/E line connects Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea, and the West Village on one train.

About Urban Bear NYC

Urban Bear grew from a single New York bear party into a multi-city brand, but the NYC weekend each September remains its flagship — now in its 18th year. It's built around community as much as nightlife: beer blasts and the street fair keep it social and daytime-friendly, not just a run of late-night circuit parties. The result is one of the most welcoming weekends on the bear calendar, and a reliably packed one for the city's leather and bear bars.

I'm Robbie, the founder of Out x Out. I'm from Minneapolis, though I'm spending 2026 building this community from the road — somewhere between South America and Asia. The idea for Out x Out came from a trip to Berlin, where the gay nightlife calendar was years ahead of ours: you could see not just where to go out, but which night to go — so naturally I wanted that kind of insider info for every city in the US (and beyond... eventually). I'm more of a behind-the-scenes type, but the whole point of this is connection: I'd take one real one over a hundred surface-level ones, and I'm trying to build that for the community, city by city.
