Fantasy Fest is Key West at its most unhinged — ten days at the end of October when the whole island goes into costume (or out of one) for parades, masquerade balls, body-painted street parties, and a nonstop party that spills from Duval Street into every bar, guesthouse, and pool in Old Town. It started in 1979 as a scheme to fill hotel rooms in the slow season, and the gay community has been at the center of it ever since.

Fantasy Fest was born in 1979 out of a simple problem: October in Key West was dead. The weather was still gorgeous, but the tourists were gone, and shop owners up and down Duval put out "gone fishing" signs and closed for weeks at a time. Four local businessmen — Bill Conkle, Tony Falcone, Joe Liszka, and Frank Romano — figured a giant costume party might tempt visitors back early, so they leaned into the island’s Halloween-loving, dress-up spirit and threw a parade. It worked. Four decades on, Fantasy Fest draws 60,000+ people and tens of millions of dollars to the island every October, and that first ragtag parade has grown into ten days of masquerade balls, body-paint street parties, and fiercely competitive krewe floats.
The gay community has been in the DNA of the festival from the start. Key West was a queer haven long before Fantasy Fest existed, and the Pink Triangle bars have always been among the wildest, most creative corners of the whole event. When people say Fantasy Fest is where Key West truly lets loose, the gay scene is a big part of the reason why.

The theme changes every year (2026 is "Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals"), and locals genuinely plan their costumes for months. Lean into the theme — you’ll blend right in, and the photos are better for it.
Key West's gay nightlife is concentrated in the Pink Triangle — the 700–800 blocks of Duval and the streets around it — and during Fantasy Fest it runs 24/7. The anchor is the Bourbon Street Pub complex: a video bar, a big back garden with a pool, and go-go dancers, all connected to 801 Bourbon Bar upstairs (home of the famous 801 Girls drag shows). Across the street, the Aquaplex — Aqua, 22&Co, and the Back Bar — runs the Aquanettes drag shows and dance parties all week. One Saloon is the late-night cruise bar, La Te Da does cabaret, and Garden of Eden is the clothing-optional rooftop bar.

The gay parties to plan around:
You’ll need real food to survive ten days of this, and Key West punches well above its size on the dining front. Bahama Village — the historic Afro-Bahamian neighborhood just off Duval, and the home of the Goombay street festival — is where to start. Blue Heaven is the island institution: a ramshackle courtyard restaurant where roosters wander between the tables and the key lime pie arrives under a mountain of meringue. For that pie on its own, Kermit’s on the waterfront is the local benchmark, chocolate-dipped slices and all.
Along Duval and the side streets, Cuban roots turn up everywhere — a Cuban mix sandwich and a strong café con leche is the classic Fantasy Fest recovery meal, and spots like El Siboney do the full roast-pork-and-plantains version a few blocks off the main drag. Late at night, the Duval food windows and 24-hour diners keep the costumed crowds fed until the bars finally close.

Reservations at the sit-down favorites (Blue Heaven, Louie’s Backyard) fill up fast over parade weekend — call ahead, or plan to eat at off-peak hours.

Do your sightseeing early in the trip. By the back half of Fantasy Fest weekend, you will not be waking up in time for a sunrise anything.
Key West lodging is mostly small guesthouses, and the gay men's resorts are the heart of the scene — you can spend the whole week without leaving. Book months ahead for the final parade weekend; it's the most expensive, most sold-out week of the year.
Guesthouses fill first and set minimum-night stays over the parade weekend. If they're booked, Old Town vacation rentals put you in walking distance of Duval — just confirm the Fantasy Fest-week rates and minimums before you commit.
Pro Tip
Skip the rental car for the island itself. Park it (or don't bring it) and get a bike — it's faster than driving Old Town during Fantasy Fest, and there's nowhere to park anyway.
Costumes are the entire point, and body paint absolutely counts as one — the body-painting scene is a Fantasy Fest signature, with artists set up around town turning bodies into full works of art. Nudity is common but not a free-for-all: local rules require certain bits stay covered (paint or pasties do the job), and it is enforced, so keep it tasteful and legal. When in doubt, more paint.
Late October in Key West is warm and humid — daytime highs in the mid-80s, water still bathtub-warm, and the odd tropical downpour, since it’s the tail end of hurricane season. Pack light, breathable layers, plenty of sunscreen, comfortable shoes for miles of walking, and a costume plan that survives both the heat and the sweat.

Pace yourself — ten days is a marathon, not a sprint. Hydrate, take a pool day off mid-week, and you’ll still be standing for the Saturday-night parade.

Fantasy Fest is a mixed, all-adults street festival, but the gay community has been central to it since it began in 1979, and Key West's Pink Triangle (the 700–800 blocks of Duval) is one of the liveliest parts of the whole event. For the gay experience, stay at a Pink Triangle guesthouse or gay men's resort — Island House, Alexander's, New Orleans House, or La Te Da put you steps from Duval. Book months in advance for the final parade weekend.
Fly into Key West International (EYW) if you can find a nonstop, or fly into Miami/Fort Lauderdale and drive the Overseas Highway (~4 hours). Once on the island, walk or bike — don't rely on a car.
Costumes are expected, and body paint counts as one. Full nudity isn’t allowed — local ordinances require genitals stay covered (paint or pasties are fine), and it’s enforced — but Fantasy Fest is famously permissive otherwise. Keep it creative, tasteful, and legal.
