The Aquanettes bring themed drag shows and dancing every night of Fantasy Fest across the Aquaplex — Aqua, 22&Co, and the Back Bar. Key West's drag institution, in overdrive for the fest. Cover varies.

Fantasy Fest is Key West at its most unhinged — ten days at the end of October when the whole island goes into costume (or out of one) for parades, masquerade balls, body-painted street parties, and a nonstop party that spills from Duval Street into every bar, guesthouse, and pool in Old Town. It started in 1979 as a scheme to fill hotel rooms in the slow season, and the gay community has been at the center of it ever since.

This is the gay guide to Fantasy Fest 2026: the marquee events worth planning around, the Pink Triangle bars and pool parties where the queer crowd actually spends its nights, where to stay, and how to survive ten days on a two-by-four-mile island. However you costume up, here's how to do it right.

Fantasy Fest 2026 Overview

  • When: October 16–25, 2026 — a full 10 days
  • 2026 theme: "Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals" — think Madonna, Bowie, Prince, Elton, Gaga
  • The grand finale: the Fantasy Fest Parade down Duval Street on Saturday, October 24 at 7:00 PM
  • The gay heart: the Pink Triangle — the cluster of gay bars on the 800 block of Duval, anchored by the Bourbon Street Pub complex
  • Costumes: the whole point. Body paint counts. Nudity is common but has rules — keep it tasteful and legal
  • Crowd: 60,000+ visitors across the ten days; it's the island's biggest event of the year
  • Cost: the street events and parade are free to watch; ticketed balls and gay pool parties vary

The Marquee Events

Fantasy Fest is 60+ events over ten days. The ones worth building your trip around:

  • Fantasy Fest Parade — Saturday, October 24 at 7:00 PM. The showstopping finale: massive motorized floats, marching krewes, and hundreds of thousands lining Duval Street. Stake out a spot early.
  • Captain Morgan's Masquerade March — Friday, October 23. A costumed community march that winds from the Key West Cemetery through Old Town to the Equator Resort — a big gay-favorite the night before the parade.
  • Zombie Bike Ride — Sunday, October 18. Thousands of costumed, made-up "zombies" ride bikes through town. Come as the undead.
  • Goombay Festival — the Bahama Village street festival (Caribbean food, music, crafts) that runs the parade weekend.
  • Headdress Ball & Royal Coronation Ball — the ticketed, over-the-top costume balls that crown Fantasy Fest royalty.

Pro Tip

The two biggest nights are the Masquerade March (Friday, Oct 23) and the Parade (Saturday, Oct 24). Book your room around that final weekend first — it sells out the island months ahead.

The Gay Scene: The Pink Triangle

Key West's gay nightlife is concentrated in the Pink Triangle — the 800 block of Duval and the streets around it — and during Fantasy Fest it runs 24/7. The anchor is the Bourbon Street Pub complex: a video bar, a big back garden with a pool, and go-go dancers, all connected to 801 Bourbon Bar upstairs (home of the famous 801 Girls drag shows). Across the street, the Aquaplex — Aqua, 22&Co, and the Back Bar — runs the Aquanettes drag shows and dance parties all week. One Saloon is the late-night cruise bar, La Te Da does cabaret, and Garden of Eden is the clothing-optional rooftop bar.

The gay parties to plan around:

  • Island House Pool Party — the gay men's clothing-optional resort throws its legendary day-and-night pool parties throughout Fantasy Fest.
  • Bourbon Street Pub's "Exposed" Party — the pool-and-foam party (Thursday) that's a Fantasy Fest institution, plus the Monday Underwear Party.
  • Aquanettes Drag at Aqua — themed drag and dancing every night of the fest at the Aquaplex.

Where to Stay for Fantasy Fest

Key West lodging is mostly small guesthouses, and the gay men's resorts are the heart of the scene — you can spend the whole week without leaving. Book months ahead for the final parade weekend; it's the most expensive, most sold-out week of the year.

Gay Guesthouses & Resorts

  • Island House — the largest gay men's clothing-optional resort in Key West, with a pool scene that's a party in itself.
  • Alexander's Guesthouse — a beloved LGBTQ+ guesthouse with a pool and daily happy hour, walkable to Duval.
  • New Orleans House — the only all-male guesthouse right in the Pink Triangle, above the Bourbon Street Pub complex — you're literally on top of the action.
  • La Te Da — historic guesthouse, restaurant, and cabaret in one, a short walk from the bars.

Booking Tips & Vacation Rentals

Guesthouses fill first and set minimum-night stays over the parade weekend. If they're booked, Old Town vacation rentals put you in walking distance of Duval — just confirm the Fantasy Fest-week rates and minimums before you commit.

Getting There & Getting Around

  • Fly: Key West International (EYW) is a short cab or bike ride from Old Town. Nonstops are limited and pricey during Fantasy Fest — book early. Many visitors fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale and drive.
  • Drive: The Overseas Highway (US-1) from Miami is about 3.5–4 hours — a spectacular drive over the Keys. Expect heavy traffic and pricey parking during the fest.
  • Get around: Old Town is tiny and walkable, and everyone rents a bike or scooter. You will not need — or want — a car once you're on the island.

Pro Tip

Skip the rental car for the island itself. Park it (or don't bring it) and get a bike — it's faster than driving Old Town during Fantasy Fest, and there's nowhere to park anyway.

When is Fantasy Fest Key West 2026?

Fantasy Fest 2026 runs October 16–25, 2026 — ten days. The grand Fantasy Fest Parade down Duval Street is Saturday, October 24 at 7:00 PM.

What is the 2026 Fantasy Fest theme?

The 2026 theme is "Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals," so expect costumes inspired by Madonna, David Bowie, Prince, Elton John, Lady Gaga, and Broadway.

Is Fantasy Fest a gay event?

Fantasy Fest is a mixed, all-adults street festival, but the gay community has been central to it since it began in 1979, and Key West's Pink Triangle (the 800 block of Duval) is one of the liveliest parts of the whole event. There are gay-specific pool parties, drag shows, and guesthouse events all week.

Where is the Fantasy Fest gay scene?

The Pink Triangle — the 800 block of Duval Street — is Key West's gay district: the Bourbon Street Pub complex, 801 Bourbon, the Aquaplex (Aqua/22&Co), One Saloon, La Te Da, and Garden of Eden are all within a block or two.

Is Fantasy Fest free?

The street events, the Masquerade March, and the parade are free to watch. Ticketed events — the Headdress Ball, Coronation Ball, and many gay pool parties — have cover charges that vary.

Where should I stay for Fantasy Fest?

For the gay experience, stay at a Pink Triangle guesthouse or gay men's resort — Island House, Alexander's, New Orleans House, or La Te Da put you steps from Duval. Book months in advance for the final parade weekend.

How do I get to Key West for Fantasy Fest?

Fly into Key West International (EYW) if you can find a nonstop, or fly into Miami/Fort Lauderdale and drive the Overseas Highway (~4 hours). Once on the island, walk or bike — don't rely on a car.

Make a Trip of It

Key West is a bucket-list gay destination year-round, and Fantasy Fest is its wildest week. Round out the trip with our gay guide to Key West, the best gay bars in Key West, and where to sleep in our gay-friendly Key West hotels guide.
