Subscribe NowThere's a lot of bad information about gay nude beaches, and most of it comes from conflating two different things: beaches that are gay, and beaches where you can legally be naked. Plenty of famous gay beaches are not clothing-optional at all. A few clothing-optional beaches aren't especially gay. And a handful are both — those are the ones worth planning a trip around.
This guide separates them, because getting it wrong is the difference between a good afternoon and a citation.

Clothing-optional status at every beach here depends on a park authority that can change it, and several of these are tolerated by custom rather than authorized in writing. Rules also vary *within* a single beach — one stretch may be clothing-optional while the section by the parking lot is not. The legal picture, briefly
Public nudity in the US is governed at state, county, and sometimes park-district level, which is why the map is so inconsistent.
- Legally clothing-optional means a specific authority has designated the beach for it. There are only a few of these, and they're mostly on federal or state park land.
- Tolerated by custom covers most of the rest — nudity isn't authorized, but it's long-established and rangers generally don't pursue it. Tolerance can change with a new superintendent or a complaint.
- Gay but textile means exactly what it says. Many of the best-known gay beaches fall here.
Pro Tip
Tolerance is not permission, and it varies year to year. Where a beach is "tolerated rather than designated," check the managing park's current rules before you go — enforcement swings with staffing and complaints.
Legally clothing-optional and reliably gay
Haulover Beach — Miami, Florida
The best combination of "legal" and "busy" in the country. Haulover is a Miami-Dade County park with a county-sanctioned clothing-optional section, and the gay area sits at the north end of that stretch. Lifeguards, restrooms, paid parking, and a genuine crowd on weekends.
Note: the clothing-optional designation covers a defined stretch of Haulover, not the whole park — the southern beach is textile and signed as such. Walk north past the marked boundary.
Gunnison Beach — Sandy Hook, New Jersey
Inside Gateway National Recreation Area at Fort Hancock, Gunnison is a designated clothing-optional beach on federal parkland and the closest one to New York City — roughly 90 minutes by car, or a seasonal ferry-and-shuttle combination. The gay contingent gathers toward the northern end.
Because it's National Park Service land the designation is comparatively stable, but it is still an NPS decision — and the park charges beach access and parking fees in season, with lots that fill early on summer weekends.
Black's Beach — San Diego, California
Below the cliffs at Torrey Pines, Black's is the West Coast's best-known clothing-optional beach. The gay stretch is toward the north, nearer the Glider Port descent.
Two real cautions. The descent is a steep, eroding cliff trail — genuinely strenuous, poorly lit, and closed from time to time after slides; check before you commit to it. And nudity here is tolerated rather than formally designated. Enforcement has historically been light, but it isn't a designation you can rely on, and the beach spans multiple jurisdictions along its length.
Little Beach — Maui, Hawaii
Just past Big Beach in Mākena State Park, reached by a short scramble over the rocky headland, Little Beach is the long-standing clothing-optional beach in Hawaii and has a substantial gay crowd.
This is the one to be most careful about. Nudity here is customary, not legal — Hawaii has no statute permitting it, the beach sits in a state park, and the state has periodically enforced against both nudity and the once-famous Sunday drum circle. Citations have been issued. Treat the status as genuinely uncertain and check current conditions locally before you go. The surf at neighbouring Big Beach also has a serious shorebreak and a real drowning record.
Hippie Hollow — Austin, Texas
A Travis County park on Lake Travis, and the best-known clothing-optional public park in Texas. Not an ocean beach — it's rocky lakefront ledges — and it draws a mixed crowd with a reliable gay presence. Adults only, strictly 18+, with an entry fee per person.
Two things that catch people out: there's no sand and no shade, so the ledges get brutally hot, and lake levels swing a lot — in low-water years the walk down to the water is considerably longer than the map suggests.

Baker Beach — San Francisco, California
The north end of Baker Beach, the stretch closest to the Golden Gate Bridge, has been San Francisco's clothing-optional beach for decades and the gay crowd concentrates there. It's Golden Gate National Recreation Area land, so nudity is tolerated by long custom rather than formally designated.
Two practicalities: the water is cold and the currents are dangerous — this is not a swimming beach, and there are no lifeguards at the north end. And the fog is real; a beach day here can be 58°F and grey in July while the rest of the city is sunny.
Rooster Rock State Park — Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Widely credited as the first officially designated clothing-optional beach in the United States, in an Oregon state park about 20 minutes east of Portland on the Columbia River. The clothing-optional stretch is up-river, completely separate from and not visible from the clothing-required family beach, and the eastern end of the slough is the gay men's section. River swimming rather than ocean, and it's a day-use park with a parking fee.
One seasonal caveat: the area behind the beach is a slough, and after a wet winter or a high-water spring the approach can be genuinely marshy well into June. Check conditions if you're going early in the season.
The Fire Island stretch — gay, and nude in practice
Fire Island is the densest concentration of gay beach culture in America, and the nudity situation is specific to where you stand. The ocean beach between Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines — the walk through the Meat Rack — has been informally clothing-optional for generations. It is not designated, and the National Park Service has periodically posted against it and stepped up patrols in some seasons. Custom is deeply established, but this is tolerance rather than permission — and it can tighten without notice.
Cherry Grove and the Pines themselves are textile on the main beachfronts near the boardwalks. The nudity is in the stretch between.

Provincetown — two beaches, two answers
Herring Cove Beach
The gay section of Herring Cove, along the shoreline away from the main parking area, is the social heart of P-town's beach scene. It is Cape Cod National Seashore land and officially textile. Nudity happens further along the shoreline away from the main access point and is tolerated rather than permitted — rangers do occasionally act on it, so don't treat the walk out as a designated nude beach.
Boy Beach
The informal name for the gay stretch, and the one people actually ask for by name. Same National Seashore rules apply.
If you're staying in town, the Boatslip is where the beach day ends — its afternoon tea dance is a P-town institution.
Gay, popular, and not nude — the ones people get wrong
These come up constantly in searches for gay nude beaches. They're excellent gay beaches. They are not clothing-optional.
Poodle Beach — Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
The gay beach for D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia, at the south end of the Rehoboth boardwalk. Busy, social, and firmly textile — Delaware does not permit public nudity, and Rehoboth enforces it. If you've searched whether Poodle Beach is clothing-optional, the answer is no.
North Shores Beach — Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
Just north of town toward Cape Henlopen, North Shores is the second gay beach in Rehoboth and quieter than Poodle. Also textile.
West Street Beach — Laguna Beach, California
The gay beach of Orange County, a small cove reached by a stairway off South Coast Highway. Long-standing, well-loved, and textile.
Will Rogers State Beach — Los Angeles, California
"Ginger Rogers Beach," the historic gay section near Santa Monica. Textile, lifeguarded, and very much a see-and-be-seen stretch rather than a nude one.
12th Street Beach — Miami Beach, Florida
The gay beach in South Beach, at 12th Street and Ocean Drive. Central, crowded and textile — for nudity in Miami you want Haulover, twenty minutes north.
Not a beach, but the same idea
The Dunes Resort — Saugatuck, Michigan
The largest gay resort in the Midwest runs a clothing-optional pool area, which is the practical answer for the Great Lakes — Michigan's public beaches are textile. Oval Beach in Saugatuck has a gay-frequented section, but it is not nude.

Where it has already been taken away
Worth knowing, because it's the clearest argument for checking before you travel.
Mazo Beach, Wisconsin was for decades the Midwest's best-known clothing-optional beach, on the Wisconsin River near Mazomanie. The DNR closed it to public use in 2016, citing drug use and public sexual activity it had spent over a decade failing to control. Any guide still listing it is out of date — and in a more recent board vote the Wisconsin DNR went further and enacted a ban on public nudity across state natural lands, which ends any realistic prospect of it returning.
Florida's Canaveral National Seashore beaches have been through repeated enforcement cycles on the same pattern. The lesson is consistent: the beaches that lose their status lose it to enforcement problems, not to policy fashion — which is why the etiquette below is not just manners.
Etiquette that actually matters
- No cameras. None. This is the one rule with no flexibility. Phones out, even pointed at the water, will get you confronted and often ejected.
- Bring a towel to sit on. Standard, and at some beaches it's posted.
- Don't stare, and don't hover. Walking the waterline is normal; standing over someone's blanket isn't.
- Sex on the beach is illegal everywhere on this list, including at the clothing-optional ones. The designation covers nudity, not activity, and enforcement of the latter is real.
- Sunscreen where you haven't before. Said lightly, meant seriously.
Pro Tip
Most of these charge for parking, and the good lots fill by late morning on summer weekends — Haulover and Gunnison in particular. Arrive before 11am or plan on a walk.

Which US gay beaches are actually clothing-optional?
Haulover Beach in Miami and Gunnison Beach in New Jersey are the two clearest cases — both formally designated, both with established gay sections.
