Wilton Manors is greater Fort Lauderdale's gay city — a small, separately incorporated island of a town where the LGBTQ+ community isn't a neighborhood within the city, it basically is the city. Its main street, Wilton Drive, packs 15-plus gay bars, clubs, cabarets, and restaurants end to end, close enough that locals live by one rule: park once, walk everything.

Nicknamed the "Island City" for the canals that ring it, Wilton Manors has one of the densest LGBTQ+ populations anywhere in the country, an all-LGBTQ+ elected government, and a Pride festival that lights up the whole Drive. Here's what Wilton Manors is, the bars along the Drive, the rest of the Fort Lauderdale scene worth a trip, and how to eat, get around, and stay.

About Wilton Manors: The "Island City" Gayborhood

Wilton Manors is a roughly two-square-mile city entirely surrounded by greater Fort Lauderdale, ringed by the South and Middle Rivers — hence the "Island City" nickname. What sets it apart from most gayborhoods is scale: this isn't a gay street in a larger city, it's a whole municipality where the queer community is the majority culture. The 2010 U.S. Census found Wilton Manors had the second-highest share of same-sex couples of any U.S. city, behind only Provincetown, Massachusetts.

That density shows up in local government, too. In 2018 the city elected an all-LGBTQ+ city commission — mayor and commissioners alike — one of the first U.S. cities to do so. Wilton Manors is an official LGBTQ Safe Space, with police trained on LGBTQ+ issues and openly gay officers on the force; PDA on Wilton Drive is simply normal.

The Drive itself is the spine. Georgie's Alibi opened here in April 1997 and catalyzed the transformation of what had been a sleepy commercial strip into the gayborhood it is today — and nearly three decades later the bars, restaurants, guesthouses, and shops run wall to wall along it. It's the kind of place where you can spend a whole weekend and never need a car.

The rhythm is South Florida's: the scene runs year-round, but peak season is roughly December through April, when the weather is perfect and snowbirds swell the community. The town is also just a few minutes from Fort Lauderdale Beach, so a classic Wilton Manors trip pairs beach days with Drive nights. That combination — a dense, walkable gay strip minutes from the sand — is what keeps visitors coming back season after season.

Pro Tip

Wilton Drive is the whole scene in one walkable strip — 10-plus bars within a few blocks. Stay in Wilton Manors and you won't touch a car all weekend except to reach the beach.

Gay Bars on Wilton Drive

The Drive's bars run the full spectrum — an all-day anchor, a 30-year dance club, a mega-club, a leather bar, a sports bar, and a string of neighborhood spots — most within a block or two of each other.

Georgie's Alibi Monkey Bar (2266 Wilton Dr) is the cornerstone — the bar that started the Drive, open since 1997. It's a sprawling bar-restaurant running 11 AM to 2 AM daily, with weekend drag shows, famous Friday and Saturday 2-for-1 happy hours, and a crowd that spans daytime lunch regulars to late-night dancers. The full menu means you can eat, drink, and stay put all night.

Hunters Nightclub (2232–2238 Wilton Dr) is the club that defined the Drive's nightlife — a 30-year fixture with multiple bars, a big dance floor, and themed nights that peak on Saturdays and during Pride and Bear Week. Right next door in spirit is The Manor Complex (2345 Wilton Dr), Wilton Manors' biggest production: a multi-level mega-club with several dance floors, drag, runway events, and Miami-scale weekend parties.

Eagle Wilton Manors (2209 Wilton Dr) is the leather and bear home base — part of the international Eagle network, with Bear Cave nights, the underground CODE bar, and Eagle Leathers selling gear on-site. Its annual Pride Block Party turns the sidewalk into an outdoor dance floor. For game day, Gym Sportsbar (2287 Wilton Dr) brings big screens and watch-party energy, and Scandals Saloon (3073 NE 6th Ave) mixes jazz, funk, and house with a warm-weather terrace.

Rounding out the strip are the easygoing in-between spots — Johnsons (2340 Wilton Dr), the casual mid-Drive duck-in; Pub on the Drive (2283 Wilton Dr), a bar-restaurant with live entertainment and drag; and just off the strip on Andrews, The Corner Pub — the low-key neighborhood local.

Pro Tip

First time on the Drive? Start at Georgie's Alibi, then simply walk north — you'll pass most of the strip's bars in a few blocks and can dip into whichever matches your energy.

Beyond Wilton Manors: More Fort Lauderdale Gay Bars

The Drive is the heart, but greater Fort Lauderdale has its own gay bars off the strip — a short rideshare turns up leather, Latin nights, cabaret, and dive-bar energy you won't find on Wilton Drive.

Leather & classic. **Ramrod** (1508 NE 4th Ave) is the old-school leather and Levi's bar in Fort Lauderdale proper — Monday cigar socials, Sunday leather nights, and a grittier vibe than the polished Eagle. **Boardwalk** (1721 N Andrews Ave) is one of the city's oldest gay bars, 30-plus years of cabaret dancers, drag, and cheap drinks in a local neighborhood setting.

Dance & dive. **LeBoy** (1243 NE 11th Ave) draws a younger, largely Latin crowd with reggaeton and themed dance nights — a Miami-influenced counterpoint to the Drive. **Mona's** (502 E Sunrise Blvd) is the unfussy neighborhood bar for locals, and **321 Slammer** (321 W Sunrise Blvd) is the genuine dive — cheap drinks, pool tables, zero pretension.

Drag brunch. **Aquaplex** (1421 E Oakland Park Blvd) is ground zero for Fort Lauderdale drag brunch — full shows with top local performers; book ahead on weekends.

Where to Eat & Drink in Wilton Manors

The Drive eats as well as it drinks. Rosie's Bar & Grill (2449 Wilton Dr) is the Wilton Manors institution — tropical comfort food, strong cocktails, and a packed patio that's the daytime gathering spot, with a legendary brunch crowd. For something more refined, Apt. 9F (2163 Wilton Dr) is a speakeasy-style cocktail bar with craft drinks and shareable plates, and Le Patio (2401 NE 11th Ave) serves French-inspired cuisine in a charming courtyard just off the Drive.

Because the strip mixes bars and restaurants block by block, you can build an entire evening — dinner, drinks, a drag show, a nightcap — without walking more than a couple hundred feet.

Things to Do in Wilton Manors

Beyond the bars, Wilton Manors carries real community and cultural weight. The Pride Center at Equality Park (2040 N Dixie Hwy) is one of the largest LGBTQ+ community centers in the Southeast — programming, health services, and events year-round — and Island City Stage (2304 Dixie Hwy) is an award-winning LGBTQ+ theater company. The Drive is also dotted with queer-owned art galleries and shops for a daytime browse.

The city's signature moment is Stonewall Pride, held on Wilton Drive each June. The whole Drive becomes a mile-long street festival with vendors, food, and stages, building to the after-dark Glow Night Parade — one of the few illuminated evening Pride parades in the country, drawing tens of thousands. Come Halloween, Wicked Manors takes over the Drive with an enormous costumed street party. And the winter calendar brings the metro's biggest circuit weekends — Winter Party in late February and Bear Week in the spring — when the guesthouses fill and the clubs run at full tilt. Between events, the city's canals and parks — the Island City's namesake water and green space — make for an easy daytime reset.

Getting to & Around Wilton Manors

Wilton Manors sits just north of downtown Fort Lauderdale and a few minutes from Fort Lauderdale Beach. From Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL), it's about a 15–20 minute rideshare; Brightline's Fort Lauderdale station also connects the region by rail, with a short rideshare to the Drive from there.

For the gay bars off the Drive (Ramrod, Boardwalk, LeBoy, Mona's, 321 Slammer, Aquaplex), it's a short $8–12 rideshare into Fort Lauderdale proper. Florida bars serve until 2 AM, and the Drive's density means you're never more than a block from an open business.

Pro Tip

Staying on or near the Drive is the move — you can walk to 10-plus bars, then it's a quick rideshare to the beach by day. A car is optional the entire trip.

I'm Robbie, the founder of Out x Out. I'm from Minneapolis, though I'm spending 2026 building this community from the road — somewhere between South America and Asia. The idea for Out x Out came from a trip to Berlin, where the gay nightlife calendar was years ahead of ours: you could see not just where to go out, but which night to go — so naturally I wanted that kind of insider info for every city in the US (and beyond... eventually). I'm more of a behind-the-scenes type, but the whole point of this is connection: I'd take one real one over a hundred surface-level ones, and I'm trying to build that for the community, city by city.
