What is the Gay Neighborhood in Chicago?

Chicago's primary LGBTQ+ neighborhood is Northalsted, centered along North Halsted Street between Belmont Avenue and Addison Street in the Lakeview neighborhood on the city's North Side. Historically known as Boystown, it was officially designated as a gay district in 1997 by then-Mayor Richard M. Daley, making it the first officially recognized gay village in the United States. The city installed iconic rainbow pylons along Halsted Street to mark the district.

What to Find in Northalsted

Northalsted is home to the densest concentration of gay bars, restaurants, and businesses in the Midwest. Major landmarks include:

  • Sidetrack — the Midwest's largest gay bar
  • Roscoe's Tavern — a Boystown institution with weekly drag competitions
  • Hydrate Nightclub — Chicago's premier gay dance club
  • The Legacy Walk — an outdoor museum featuring bronze plaques honoring 40+ LGBTQ+ historical figures

The neighborhood hosts Chicago's biggest queer events: the Chicago Pride Parade, Pride Fest, Northalsted Market Days, and the Haunted Halsted Halloween Parade.

Andersonville

A few miles north, Andersonville (centered along Clark Street near Foster Avenue) has emerged as a second thriving LGBTQ+ neighborhood. Sometimes called "Lesbianville," Andersonville is especially popular with queer women, LGBTQ+ families, and those seeking a more relaxed, community-oriented vibe. Key spots include:

  • Nobody's Darling — a celebrated queer women's cocktail lounge
  • Meeting House Tavern — community-focused gay bar
  • A mix of independent bookshops, cafes, and vintage stores

Other Neighborhoods

Beyond these two hubs, neighborhoods like Edgewater, Uptown, Rogers Park, and Humboldt Park (home to Dorothy, a lesbian bar) also have growing LGBTQ+ communities. Chicago's queer scene is increasingly decentralized, with welcoming spaces spread across the city — but Northalsted and Andersonville remain the historic and cultural anchors.
