The Best Vacations for Gay Men Over 40: Where to Go, Where to Stay, and What to Expect
After 40 the velvet rope matters less and the pool deck matters more. Here are the six destinations that deliver, the bear weeks and cruises built for a slower pace, and where to stay in each, drawn from our venue listings and event guides.

Subscribe NowThe best vacations for gay men over 40 are the ones built around a pool, a beach or a porch rather than a 2 AM line: Palm Springs, Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors, Provincetown, Key West, Puerto Vallarta and New Orleans, plus the bear weeks, gay cruises and small-group trips that put a crowd your age in one place without anyone having to hunt for it. This guide walks through each one with where to stay, which weekend to pick and what the trip actually feels like, drawn from our venue listings and event guides rather than a brochure. Dates for 2027 weekends are taken from the organizers where they have been announced and marked as expected where they have not.
The Short Answer: Where Gay Men Over 40 Actually Vacation
- Palm Springs: men-only, clothing-optional resorts in Warm Sands, with the Arenas Road bars a short drive away. The pool-deck vacation.
- Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors: gay guesthouses a few minutes from Sebastian Street Beach, and a bar strip on Wilton Drive a short drive from the guesthouses.
- Provincetown: a walkable town at the tip of Cape Cod with an afternoon tea dance, inns rather than hotels, and a Bear Week in July that is the crowd for this article.
- Key West: guesthouses on quiet streets a few blocks from Duval Street, including a 21-plus men's resort that has been running since 1976.
- Puerto Vallarta: the Zona Romántica, a beach lined with gay hotels, and BeefDip, a bear week every January.
- New Orleans: a city vacation where the bars are a walk from your hotel and the food is the headline. Southern Decadence runs Labor Day weekend.
- Bear weeks and gay cruises: the two formats that reliably deliver a 40-plus crowd, covered below with links to our full guides.
Pro Tip
The pattern across every destination here is the same: the gay hotels and resorts are where the trip happens, and the bars are a bonus. Book the stay first, then plan the nights.
What Changes About Gay Travel After 40
Nobody ages out of a dance floor, and plenty of men over 50 still do the circuit. What changes for most people is the ratio. A trip that used to be built around three club nights becomes a trip built around one good night out, two long pool days, dinners that start at seven and a bed you are happy to be in by midnight. The destinations below work because they have both halves within a few minutes of each other. You can go out, and you can not go out, and neither choice costs you the trip.
The second shift is who is around you. If you want a crowd that includes people your age, the surest way to find one is to pick a stay or a weekend that was designed for it: a men-only resort, a bear week, a river cruise, a small-group tour. Every section here names that option explicitly.
Palm Springs: The Resort-Pool Vacation
Palm Springs is the simplest version of this trip. The gay men's resorts cluster in Warm Sands, a few residential blocks south of downtown, and most of them are clothing-optional inside the walls. Our Palm Springs gay resorts guide covers every one with pools, policies and rates from the resorts' own sites. The short version: Santiago, INNdulge, Descanso and Casa Oliver are the Warm Sands names people book first, CCBC is the 21-plus men's resort out in Cathedral City, on Gay Resort Drive, and the all-welcome resorts such as The Saguaro run drag brunch on weekends if you would rather have a mixed pool deck.
The Arenas Road bars are about a mile from Warm Sands, a short drive or a long walk, which is the right distance: close enough for a night out, far enough that the resort stays quiet. Palm Springs Pride in early November is one of the weekends the resorts sell out for, along with White Party in April and the women's weekend, the Dinah, in late September. Summer is pool season at over 100 degrees and the cheapest time to book a Warm Sands room. Our Palm Springs LGBTQ+ guide has the full city picture.
Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors: Beach by Day, Wilton Drive by Night
Fort Lauderdale is a guesthouse city. The gay stays are guesthouses and one 96-room resort, most of them men-only and clothing-optional, spread between the beach, Victoria Park and Wilton Manors. Our Fort Lauderdale gay resorts guide walks through all ten from their own sites. The Grand Resort and Spa sits two blocks from the Atlantic, Pineapple Point is in residential Victoria Park, The Big Coconut sits just off Sunrise Boulevard between the beach and Wilton Manors, Inn On The Drive is just off Wilton Drive, and Cabanas is under a mile away in Wilton Manors.
Sebastian Street Beach is the gay beach, on the ocean side of A1A, and the day there runs from late morning until the sun drops behind the hotels. Wilton Drive, the bar strip in Wilton Manors, is a short drive from the guesthouses and runs from happy hour onward. The two weekends to know are Wicked Manors, the Halloween street party on Wilton Drive, and Pig Week, the ten-day gay men's fetish and pool-party week that runs November 27 to December 6, 2026. Our Fort Lauderdale LGBTQ+ guide covers the neighborhoods and the rest of the year.
Provincetown: The Slower Week
Provincetown is a three-mile town at the tip of Cape Cod where you park the car on arrival and do not touch it again. The stays are inns and guesthouses along Commercial Street and the side streets off it, many of them gay-owned, and the day has a fixed shape: beach or pool until mid-afternoon, the tea dance at the Boatslip, dinner, then a show or a bar. The Boatslip's afternoon tea dance is the anchor of the day in season, and the Crown & Anchor, the entertainment complex on Commercial Street, is where many of the shows and the late nights happen; it changed hands in 2026 and its hotel rooms were closed for the 2026 season, so check before booking it as a stay.
The week for this article is Provincetown Bear Week, July 10 to 17, 2027. Our Bear Week guide has the full schedule, from the tea dances to the parties and the bear tags. Expect a town full of bears and the men who like them, a pace that runs on pool parties and tea rather than afterhours, and inns that sell out months ahead. If you want a quieter town, September and the first week of October are the stretch before Women's Week, and rates are generally lower than in July. Provincetown Carnival, expected in mid-August 2027, is the other big week, louder and more costumed than Bear Week. Our Provincetown LGBTQ+ guide covers getting there, the beaches and where to eat.

Key West: Guesthouse Island
Key West is Provincetown with palm trees and a longer season. The gay stays are guesthouses on the quiet streets a few blocks from Duval, and the one that defines the category is Island House, a 21-plus resort exclusively for gay men that has operated on Fleming Street since 1976, according to our venue listing. New Orleans House is a men-only guesthouse directly above the Bourbon Street Pub on Duval, Alexander's is an adults-only guesthouse in a restored 1902 Conch house, and La Te Da combines a small adults-only hotel with a restaurant and a cabaret, so you can see a show without leaving the building.
The Duval Street bars are a short walk from every one of these. Key West Pride runs in early June, and Tropical Heat, the men's weekend, is expected in mid-August 2027. The scene runs year-round, so there is no off-season to avoid. Our Key West LGBTQ+ guide covers the beaches, the sunset routine and the rest of the island.

Pro Tip
For Bear Week, BeefDip, Pig Week and Tropical Heat, book the men's guesthouses two to three months out. Many have fewer than 25 rooms.
Puerto Vallarta: The Zona Romántica and the January Bear Week
Puerto Vallarta is the one international pick on this list that works without a plan. The Zona Romántica is a walkable grid of gay bars, restaurants and hotels that runs down to Playa Los Muertos, and the gay stretch of that beach is marked by the blue chairs of the Blue Chairs Resort, which has a rooftop bar and a beach club on the sand. Casa Cupula is a gay-owned boutique hotel on the Amapas hillside that our listing dates to 2002, Almar is an all-suite resort on the beach itself, and Piñata PV is a small men-only hotel a block off the bar strip.
The week built for this crowd is BeefDip Bear Week, January 24 to 31, 2027, which the organizer runs out of the Zona Romántica with a welcome party on the Blue Chairs rooftop, a foam pool party, club nights at CC Slaughters including the Red Ball and the Black Ball, and the Tidal Wave charity pool party at Hotel Delfin. BeefDip's 2027 Dog Tags were on early-bird sale as of October 2026 at $290 CAD for Gold and $270 CAD for Silver, per the organizer's site. Vallarta Pride is expected in late May 2027. Our Puerto Vallarta LGBTQ+ guide has the neighborhoods, the beach clubs and the practical notes on getting around.

New Orleans: The City Vacation That Does Not Need a Club
Not every trip wants a pool. New Orleans is the city pick here because the gay bars sit on the Bourbon Street end of the French Quarter, a walk from any Quarter hotel, and because the rest of the day takes care of itself: breakfast, a long lunch, a walk through the Garden District, music on Frenchmen Street, dinner. The bars never close, since New Orleans has no last call, and the day drinks on Bourbon are as much the scene as the nights.
The weekend is Southern Decadence, which runs over Labor Day weekend and is expected September 2 to 6, 2027. It is hot, crowded and loud, and it is the weekend the gay bars spill into the surrounding Quarter streets. For a quieter trip, go in October through early December or in the spring. Hotel Monteleone and Hotel St. Pierre are the French Quarter stays in our listings, and the Hyatt Centric and Hotel de la Poste put you between Bourbon and Canal. Our New Orleans LGBTQ+ guide covers the bars, the neighborhoods and the food.
Bear Weeks and the Slower Event Weekends
If you want one weekend a year where the crowd is reliably over 40, pick a bear week. They are built on pool parties, tea dances and dinners rather than afterhours, and the three on the US and Mexico calendar are:
- Provincetown Bear Week: July 10 to 17, 2027, with the Boatslip tea dance every afternoon.
- Lazy Bear Weekend: Guerneville, on the Russian River north of San Francisco, expected in late July into early August 2027. Pool parties and the Fireside Fling, with the redwoods as the backdrop.
- BeefDip Bear Week: Puerto Vallarta, January 24 to 31, 2027. The winter one.
Beyond the bear weeks, the slower weekends on the calendar are the ones built around a town rather than a festival ground: Pig Week in Fort Lauderdale, Tropical Heat in Key West and Palm Springs Pride all fit, and each is covered above.
Gay Cruises: The Over-40 Sweet Spot
A gay cruise solves the over-40 problem by design. Everyone on the ship is there for the same week, the bar is a deck away from your cabin, and the schedule has a pool party in the afternoon and a show after dinner whether or not you ever set foot in the nightclub. Our gay cruise comparison walks through every major line, and the choice for this crowd comes down to format:
- Big party charter: Atlantis Events, whose full-ship charters run to several thousand mostly gay men. The nights are big, but the days are a pool deck and a sea view.
- Mixed-community charter: VACAYA, founded in 2017, runs charters for the whole LGBTQ+ community and has a program built for solo travelers.
- River and small-ship: Brand g Vacations, founded in 2011, runs all-LGBTQ+ river cruises and small-ship ocean voyages with airport transfers, most meals and beverages included. This is the slowest format on the list, and the one with the fewest late nights.
- Bear and affinity groups on regular sailings: BearCruise and Daddy Cruises book group blocks on ordinary ships, which keeps the price down and puts your crowd within a larger one.
Pro Tip
A group sailing on a regular ship is the cheapest way into a gay cruise, and a river cruise is the slower format. If you have never done either, start with the river.
Adults-Only Gay Resorts
The resorts in Palm Springs, Fort Lauderdale and Key West above are all adults-only, and most are men-only and clothing-optional, which in practice means nude is fine on the pool deck and inside the walls and not on the street. Our US gay resorts guide lays out the full map, including Saugatuck on the Lake Michigan shore, two hours from Chicago, where The Dunes Resort anchors a Midwest gay getaway that works as a long weekend from Chicago. The guide also explains the difference between a gay resort and a gay-friendly hotel, which matters when the stay is the trip: a gay-friendly hotel welcomes you, a gay resort is where the week happens.
Group Trips If You Are Traveling Solo
The small-group gay tour operators are set up for solo travelers, and they say so on their own sites. Facts below are from each operator's own site.
- HE Travel: traces its history to a 1973 Grand Canyon trip that its site describes as the first exclusively gay adventure tour. Small-group trips designed for gay men that welcome lesbians and friends, ranging from relaxing cultural trips to high-adrenaline adventure tours, with scheduled departures a solo traveler can join.
- Out Adventures: a Canadian operator whose land tours cap at 24 guests and whose largest cruise carries 54. The company describes its typical travelers as 30 to 75 years old, mostly North American, with a mix of couples and singles.
- Brand g Vacations: the river-cruise specialist above, with a dedicated solo-travelers page and hosted trips where the staff travel with the group.
- VACAYA: runs a Solo Traveling with Ease program for single travelers joining a charter.
If a tour feels like too much structure, a bear week or a men's resort does the same job: you arrive alone and you are not alone by the first pool party.
How to Plan the Trip
- Go in the shoulder season. September and October in Provincetown, late spring and fall in Key West, summer in Palm Springs. The towns are open, the crowd is local and the rates drop.
- Balance the resort and the scene. Pick a stay where you would be happy to never leave, then treat the bars as an option. Warm Sands and the Arenas bars, the Fort Lauderdale guesthouses and Wilton Drive, the Zona Romántica and Los Muertos all work this way.
- Book the men's resorts early for the marquee weekends. Many have fewer than 25 rooms.
- Pick one anchor weekend a year. Bear Week, BeefDip, Pig Week or a river cruise. The rest of the trips can be quiet.
- Check the event dates close to departure. Organizers move weekends, and our event hubs are updated as the dates are confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do older gay men vacation?
The destinations that come up again and again are Palm Springs, Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors, Provincetown, Key West, Puerto Vallarta and New Orleans, plus gay cruises and bear weeks. They share a pattern: gay-owned stays, a beach or a pool and a bar scene within a short walk or drive of the stay.
What is the best gay vacation for a man over 50?
A bear week or a river cruise. Provincetown Bear Week in July, BeefDip in January and Brand g's river sailings are built for bears, their admirers and travelers who want a slower week, and the schedule is pool parties and dinners rather than afterhours.
Are the gay resorts in Palm Springs and Fort Lauderdale only for younger guys?
No. The men-only resorts in Warm Sands and the Fort Lauderdale guesthouses are adults-only, and several of our listings tag the crowd as mature. Our resort guides for each city cover the policies, pools and rates from the resorts' own sites.
Is Provincetown good for gay men over 40?
Yes, and Bear Week in July is the week built for that crowd. Outside of it, the town's rhythm of beach, tea dance, dinner and a show suits an older trip in any week of the season, and the September shoulder weeks are quieter and cheaper.
What is a bear week?
A week-long gathering for bears and the men who like them, built around pool parties, tea dances and dinners rather than club nights. The three on this list are Provincetown Bear Week, Lazy Bear Weekend in Guerneville and BeefDip in Puerto Vallarta.
Are gay cruises a good option for solo travelers over 40?
Yes. The ship does the work of putting everyone in the same place for a week, and VACAYA and Brand g both run programs for solo travelers. Group sailings such as BearCruise and Daddy Cruises are the cheaper route onto a ship with a built-in crowd.
Is Puerto Vallarta safe for gay travelers?
The Zona Romántica is the gay neighborhood, with hotels, bars and the beach within a walkable grid, and it has hosted gay travelers for decades. Our Puerto Vallarta guide covers getting around and the practical notes.
When should I book?
For Bear Week, BeefDip, Pig Week and Tropical Heat, two to three months out at a minimum for the men's guesthouses. For a quiet shoulder-season trip, a few weeks is usually fine.

I'm Robbie, the founder of Out x Out. I'm from Minneapolis, though I'm spending 2026 building this community from the road — somewhere between South America and Asia. The idea for Out x Out came from a trip to Berlin, where the gay nightlife calendar was years ahead of ours: you could see not just where to go out, but which night to go — so naturally I wanted that kind of insider info for every city in the US (and beyond... eventually). I'm more of a behind-the-scenes type, but the whole point of this is connection: I'd take one real one over a hundred surface-level ones, and I'm trying to build that for the community, city by city.
